Ab exercise

I’m 9 months PP, I’ve recently gone back to the gym and during a Pilates class my lower abdomen felt painful and almost bruised during some ab exercises. Is this normal after this long? I’ve avoided crunches etc since but would like to get back to ab work asap really!
