Feeds at night

I’d like to know what everyone else is doing about feeds during the night.. so I’ve just been picking my baby up and feeding her every 3 hours or so because of her fussing and making noises but she’s never actually cried in the night.. so I’ve just been told by my mum not to do that and just try and sleep through it and only get her up and feed her if she’s actually crying. I’m really struggling with the sleep deprivation and she said it’s stupid to get her up if she’s not crying because she might go back to sleep and tbh most of the time when I pick her up she is half asleep and not fully awake. So I guess I just wanna know what the right thing to do is and what’s everyone else doing, are you picking your baby up and feeding them only when they’re crying or when they’re fussing and making noises?

My 6w old slept for 6hrs for the first time last night. Before that I also used to set an alarm and feed every 3hrs. My health visitor said that as long as he's gaining weight and has plenty of wet nappies, there is no need to wake him at night for feeds. Instead, only feed him when he's hungry-aka crying. I'm hoping his new sleep schedule sticks!!

If my little girl fusses I turn a little night light on and see if her eyes are open. If they are and she’s just getting more worked up I get her before she cries and pull her into our bed to feed her. If they’re shut I just keep watching to see if it’ll pass, sometimes I put my hand near her nose so she can smell me and she goes back over to sleep. If me and my boyfriend have nothing major the next day (like if it’s the weekend or he doesn’t have to wake up pre 6.30am for work) then I give her a chance to self settle and don’t get her till she starts to cry.

People say it all depends on baby’s weight.. if she is over her birth weight then not to worry.. my son is 6 weeks and I now leave him to sleep.. he will wake me up if he is hungry by crying.. he goes anywhere between 3-5 hours now. It is bliss being able to have a few more hours sleep

I don’t get her up if baby is making noises as she will usually just fall back asleep again - I said to HV on 5 day visit that I’m not feeding her every 3 hours as she just refuses it and only drinks when she’s hungry so I just wait for her to kick off (which is every 5-6 hours) and she said that was fine. My daughter only lost 3% of her birth weight so she said she’s obviously getting enough milk. My daughter was late though so only 1 week old so might all change but so far this is what we’re doing x

It really depends…my baby is 7 weeks today, and I woke her up last night after 5 hours (my body had woke me up although she was stirring) for a feed but that’s because she only took 2ozs before bed, but if she had had a full bottle, I would have let her sleep. She’s started to go 5/6 hours between feeds and I’m happy to let her as she’s “cluster feeding” in the afternoon/evening to make up for it

I don’t wake my lo up for a feed unless I feel engorged and she’s been fussing for a while. Sometimes I wake up because I’m leaking and notice she’s asleep still so I end up pumping just to maintain my supply. Sometimes she’s fussing and uses me as a dummy for 5 mins then goes back to sleep. As long as they’re gaining weight and have wet nappies you’re fine to leave them xx

I was wondering this also as my LO often wakes up and is making noise and moving around but then drifting back off and then waking again etc and I usually leave it a while but then I figure he will wake up properly soon so I end up getting him up and feeding him but often wonder if he is just having active sleep or just some wind/gas and should leave it until he cries for food

I wait and see if she starts fussing a bit more - newborns are pretty noisy when they sleep. Most of the time she will fuss louder so I feed her, but at least once a night it stops - it’s just active sleep I think. I usually feed her every 3-5 hours overnight depending how long she sleeps. She’s 2.5 weeks old.

This is me now he's been 2 hours and I think he was actually asleep when he woke me up making noises. I gave him a feed and change anyway (it could have been because he had a huge poo that he was stirring). Though I typically go back to sleep when I hear him unless it's been more than 3 hours, then I will check now to see if his eyes are open and if not... Back to sleep lol x
