The Grange Uni Hospital

Hi I’m due to give birth here in a week or two and wondered peoples experiences after birth? I’ve just moved so want to know how different Wales is postpartum! When I had my previous son pre term I was given a medela breast pump in hospital to pump breast milk and then allowed to take it home for two weeks just signed a form until my own pump arrived, is this something they offer in Wales too? They provided nappies, shampoo, body wash, preemie clothes, formula, I had 24/7 access to the kitchen where they provided food and drink for me for two weeks and just did my own thing etc. My son was also in NICU for two weeks and I stayed all day and night with him they set me a little camp bed up next to his incubator and then eventually gave me a side room with him once I had been trained to tube feed, is this also similar or will it be frowned upon if I want to stay with him overnight? When I did go home for a night I was able to call whatever time in the early hours 2/3am etc to check in on him. If anyone could give me some insight In to how you found it postpartum especially if you stayed in for a bit that would be great. Bit worried about a completely new hospital in a new place when I had such a good experience with my first! Don’t want to ask for something and get a weird look from the nurses/midwives 😂 x

I had my son at the grange 4 months ago, I didn’t breastfeed so can’t help on that part. I took my own nappies (for baby & me🤣) , all toiletries and baby clothes. They had 2 formulas there that you could use. Food trolley came around 3 times a day on the postnatal ward. We ended up in NICU so was slightly different there, they had nappies and clothes but were limited so did ask to use ours. I hadn’t been discharged when my LB was moved to NICU, so I spent one night alone on the ward still - but I sat with my LB until early hours then went back to get some sleep. We were then lucky enough to get a side room so I was able to ‘bed in’ with him for a few days before we were allowed home. If I popped out at all they gave me the number so I could call and check up on him whenever I wanted too. All the staff there were amazing and I don’t have a bad word to say x

Forgot to add - NICU have a parents kitchen, they stock it with cereal/milk/tea&coffee/bread/biscuits, but for your main meals like lunch and tea time, ask for a voucher from the midwife in charge and you can get a free meal from the canteen x

Hello I don’t know anything about nicu but had a great experience at the grange - I was there for ten days being induced then postpartum. All the rooms are private which is different to other hospitals so you are given your privacy. On the non nicu postpartum wards you supply your own nappies and pads and formula although they do have some formula they can give you if you ask but they don’t have all the brands so depends which you’ve decided to use. They provided shampoos etc if asked but I brought my own from home along with a big towel as the ones they have are tiny. Wishing you all the best over the next few weeks! X

I'm not sure about NICU but I stayed on the general recovery ward for one night after giving birth as I was struggling to feed and wanted support. The rooms are very good - spacious and with their own loo/shower. I had to provide my own nappies, pads and wipes - when I ran out it took a while to get a nappy from the hospital. The hospital day you should bring your own formula but they do actually provide it, they gave me cow and gate to try but I believe they also had another. There is a food cart that opened a couple of times a day, they come and alert you when it's open and you go and collect your food from it - a choice of cold food like sandwiches, fruit etc or a hot meal. The midwives were all lovely and I was extremely impressed with the facilities. Only thing to note is if you need support, it can take a while as they're very stretched, so I'd advise buzzing for someone to come to you sooner rather than later if you have a question or need any painkillers etc.

When you buzz for someone, someone always comes immediately but it may not necessarily be someone that can help in the way you need. For example I needed lots of feeding help and the general nurses could help with that in part, but when I asked to see the lactation specialist it took hours. Same with needing painkillers - a nurse came straight away but all painkillers need to be signed off by the midwife which again could take an hour or two, so always buzz as soon as you think you may need something and don't wait until you really need it. That being said, again the staff were all really nice and supportive

Happy to answer any more detailed questions if I can
