Luton and Dunstable hospital?

Hi all, I’ve just had a shocking first scan appt and don’t have much hope for having my baby at L&D - the staff were horrible, the environment wasn’t clean, they made me wait 30mins for my appt with a full bladder and didn’t explain anything or answer my questions adequately during the scan. On top of this, a recent report from 2022 marked the dept as “inadequate” which explain my experience today. Has anyone else experienced the same, would you recommend L&D despite this and if not, where else am I likely to get a better level of care??

So sorry to hear you had a bad experience. It might’ve just been them having a bad day maybe? I gave birth to my little girl in July and couldn’t fault the staff at L&D at all the whole time. My only grumble was a doctor pushing for induction near the end of my pregnancy, but luckily I was informed enough to say no. Everyone I had dealings with was so lovely and made the experience such a nice one. Maybe see how it is at your 20 week scan and go from there? Hopefully you just had a bad sonographer today

I had a baby July 2024. Put in a complaint yet to hear back. They broke my waters without my permission so speed things along as “they are very busy”. This then dropped my babies heart rate ending up in a rushed emergency c-section. Worst hospital I’ve ever been to avoid if you can.

I always found the scans to be a little awkward and the waiting around was torture with a full bladder but, i had an amazing experience giving birth there in July 2023. The midwives were absolutely brilliant and I honestly couldn't fault them x

My son was born 6 weeks early on 26th December last year, I cannot praise the team at L&D enough. I was also left waiting at a couple of scans before hand, but on your next one if you really need to go let someone know as they allowed me to still go. However my 2 stays before being labour and on the 26th I found all the team so friendly and helpful. My son also sent 2 weeks in NICU and again the team are all so knowledgeable and caring. You need to feel comfortable though, I would say maybe give them another chance at the next scan before changing hospitals especially if L&D is your move convenient location wise x

I had my daughter in 2022 and The scan department and delivery suite was more than amazing when it came to my daughter and now I’m pregnant again and going to have baby in L&D again. The staff in the labour & delivery ward were amazing and then up on the maternity ward are amazing too. Don’t feel discouraged. Don’t let today’s experience give you a negative view on the hospital, some days they are just a lot more busier. Definitely raise your concerns though!

Sorry for the typos 🫣 trying so also watch my son eat his dinner x

Hey hun my son there 2023 and a elective c section and everything was amazing if you wasnt happy with the scan you could have spoke to someone there you have the right too i waited a long time for my scan appointments are never on time at the hospital due to emergency during scans or issues with peoples scans you no probs due to delays but definitely raise this issue with your midwife and get another appointment booked there the only hospital in the areas with specialist care in NICU and they have all the specialist consultants there to any other hospitals they are known for having the best maternity and pediatric care every hospital will have issues theres not one perfect hospital unless you go private and pay for the care but if you want to move hospital just speak to your midwife they will help you everything hun thats what there there for xx

I’m currently with L&D I’ve had all my scans there so far and cannot fault them. What I would say is it’s not nice waiting of course but understand things could be happening. I.e I remember I went for a scan with my last pregnancy but found out I lost the baby, I’m sure that delayed people after me. Another time I had a panic attack due to previous loss and my appointment was abit longer than usual and I’m sure this also delayed people after me. So far my experiences have been great. I had to have medical intervention to miscarry and my experience in the hospital was great the staff were superb. Sorry to mention something negative but honestly wait till your next scan before you make a decision because the mat department is great in the hospital

Milton Keynes hospital for me. I knew L&D wasn’t for me the first time I went there

Waiting 30 minutes for an appt really isn't that long, considering if you see a consultant, you could be waiting for 2 hours. No appt is ever on time with the NHS unless you are the first appt of the day. They always overrun and always have people drop in or people who need extra care. It would be the same for any hospital. I've always had my scans around 830am, so I've always been seen early or on time. However, their latest report had got me questioning if I'd move to MK hospital.

Thanks for your comments ladies I really appreciate it. Nice to hear about some good experiences but I’m still not convinced and didn’t get a good feeling when I was there..

they was amazing with me I gave birth last Wednesday and my boys perfect

I had my first there and currently pregnant again. I honestly can't fault them either they have been nothing but amazing and feel supported the whole time. I'm so sorry that you have had a negative experience. It could be worth speaking to the PAL service as well to escalate your complaint. The maternity unit are doing alot to try improve patient care and experience

I was scanned every 2 weeks through my whole pregnancy with the L&D, I had no issues. Unfortunately delayed appointments will happen in most departments and every NHS hospital. The full bladder makes it worse and feel longer aswell. Also there will be couples that are being given bad news in that department. That also delays things, I’ve been in that room 5 times whilst trying to have a successful pregnancy. Make a request for your 20 week if you have it there and asked for the early morning appointment

Echoing everyone above, had both my kids there and amazing experience! I was even readmitted 1 week postpartum because of mastitis and they were great. Scans yes will be delays and consultant appts can take time too but if i’m honest they only time i have ever in my life had a doctors appt be on time was when it was private 😂 my GP is always late, as are nurses, as are when my kids have has their vaccines etc etc. ..sad but just is the current state of the nhs 👎🏼

I had multiple scans due to being under a consultant. My lady was from Coventry and travelled everyday because she loved her job so much, she remembered us each time she scanned me. Other ones were also good I only had one rude abrupt lady so you may have got her but the others were amazing. I was scheduled a c section but my waters broke on the day they scanned me and she wasn’t breech anymore so I could deliver naturally, I spent two days in hospital on the ward before birth, midwives are very stretched but it was lovely there. My actual birth was nothing short of amazing and I had 3 amazing midwives throughout my 14 hour journey, my first 12 hour one didn’t leave my side once. Don’t be put off by inadequate ratings, a lot of the issues women suffer they already have these issues before they reach delivery ( sometimes missed by doctors/consultants) then the major issue happens in the maternity ward and it’s chalked down as their error and it’s not.
