Group B Strep

I’ve just had a call from one of the hospital midwives to tell me that a swab they took on Friday has tested positive for group B strep. She told me this means that if my waters break, I need to have my labour induced at the hospital immediately and that I’ll need IV antibiotics during labour. Does anyone have any experiences of group B strep or have any knowledge about it? The phone call was literally 4 minutes long and I feel worried now, I don’t feel I have a lot of information 🤨

If I were you, I’d request an appointment to discuss at length and have all your questions answered, or at least if you have a midwife appointment coming up ensure they’re prepared to inform you? Usually with inductions you’ll need to speak to a consultant anyway so they’ll likely make you an appointment. But definitely chase one

I had this with my first pregnancy. Honestly, it sounds scarier than it is. Firstly, the chances of your waters breaking over starting labour with contractions is much less likely. But if your waters break, they just ask you to come in and administer you with antibiotics to protect the baby. If your contractions don't start after a few hours, they will need to induce (starting with a gentle pessary induction) to get things moving. You just need to stay in hospital for monitoring, because you have less time to deliver the baby naturally when they have been exposed to GBS. My experience wasn't frightening or forceful, I was just very grateful my little boy was born with no complications due to the antibiotics administered during labour. But absolutely, if you are feeling uneasy about the lack of information, ask to speak to your midwife or a consultant. :)

@Becca I feel like this has been my experience throughout my pregnancy, I’ve been ill-informed and dismissed a lot 😣 I’ll call and ask for this!

I have it too, I’m having a c section this week, but I’ve been told if my waters break, to go in asap and tell them I’m + so they can give antibiotics asap. They just want baby out asap after the waters go I think x

I had strep B during my first labour. I was still able to be in the water and have a normal labour, I just had to have a drip of antibiotics throughout labour so had to keep one hand out of the water. Don't worry it's not to worry about, would only be a worry if you had it and didn't know!

@Sammy how many weeks are you?

@Phoebe 39+2 xx

If waters break you need to ring and tell them. I was positive with my second and I went from not knowing I was in labour at 7:30pm to waters breaking at 9:30pm didn’t make it to hospital until 11pm (at 8cm… completely unaware) I got antibiotics at 11:15pm and baby was out at 00:19am. I wasn’t on the antibiotics for long enough so had to stay a little longer for observations on the baby (my baby ended up showing a few signs of infection and ended up with antibiotics himself so our stay was a little longer but he was perfectly fine) x I do feel I know more about it now since giving birth than I did when pregnant🤷‍♀️ so it’s worth asking x I tested positive at 8weeks so had time for consultations and stuff and even they didn’t give too much information!

I had this - my waters broke at 5pm so had to go straight into hospital so I could have antibiotics. They gave it a couple of hours to see if labour started naturally but put me on the hormone drip after a little while to get things going quicker. Baby was born at 2.11am safe and healthy!

Thank you so much for sharing all of your experiences! 🤍
