Water breaking questions

Loaded post. I’m 38 weeks and nervous about what to expect when my water breaks. Our plan is for my husband to drive me to the hospital. He works in roofing and sometimes has jobs an hour away. I’ll be devastated if he can’t be there when she comes and I definitely don’t want to pay for an ambulance to get me. What does it feel like when your water breaks? Is it noticeable or do you just feel like you’re peeing? What happens if I’m on the toilet and it happens? It is like the movies where baby comes within minutes after it breaks?

For me personally, it wasn’t like the movies at all! I had a small trickle at first like I was peeing then a small gush a few hours later when the doctor broke it the rest of the way. It took hours for baby to come afterwards. You’ll notice because it won’t stop once it starts so you’ll constantly be wet vs when you pee it’ll stop.

I felt a pop when mine broke. I didn’t have my baby until 20 hours later

Mine trickled first time, my pants just felt really soiled. And unless you have immediate contractions you don’t need to rush to the hospital. The risk of infection increases after 24h c

Can be quite different for everybody I’m afraid. Try have a back up - a friend or relative who could come if you needed them? It’s not usually as dramatic as you expect. My waters broke whilst bouncing on a ball through 8 min contractions, I felt the pop, it trickled and continued to trickle rather then gush. Partner called triage who advised to go in to be checked. Calmly. Without running lol.

After my waters broke I was still only 4cm about 6hrs later so it's very rare the baby is gonna pop out after 10 minutes 😀 sure you're husband will have enough time to get to you.

I woke up at 5am 40+5 and I was set, went to the bathroom to go toilet and it just fell out (not like weeing at all) clear and doesn’t smell. Not like the movies at all I went to hospital was there 5 mins they said it was my water’s and come back in 24hrs if no contractions, so 24hr later I was induced and it still was coming out then just trickling non stop for about 30 hours stopped just before my labour started. If it’s your first baby normally baby won’t be out within a hour and your partner should hopefully have time to join you. Just let him know asap so he can make his way to stay with you. Your waters might not even break it could be contractions instead that start.

I was only 2cm when my waters broke, 24 hours later was still only 2cm till my labour started properly.

Waters also don’t always break. I got to 10cm ready to push and they still hadn’t broke so they had to break them for me

My water had to be broken at the hospital so it was a full on gush. The contractions came first with both my older children

With my first born I was in labour for probably about 20 hours. My water didn’t break until about 10 hours before . It trickle at the beginning than one gush baby wasn’t born until hours after that. With my second baby they had to break my waters when I was 10cm and ready to push.

My partner works all over the country! (N.I) so I told him to only be working within a 20min radius 🙈 my waters partially broke.. felt like a blob of liquid coming out! Thought I peed myself but turns out I was in labour 🤣

If felt like a quick gush and then it kept leaking more and more the more I walked around. I leaked for probably 4 plus hours but was only 1cm when it broke. You definitely most likely have time to get to the hospital!

My first my waters were artificially broken. My second they went as I was pushing 🤷🏻‍♀️

I will also note that I live an hour away from the hospital and my husband doesn’t work close to home and I was told I’d have plenty of time to get there

First, there’s I think a 10-15% chance of your water breaking and that being your first sign of labor. For me it wasn’t like movies. With my first baby I woke at 4am thinking I was super sweaty so I dried off and went back to bed (I had night sweats really bad anyways). Same thing happened at 5am. Then at 6am I also started feeling mild back aches so I got out of bed and noticed when I was making breakfast that I was dripping a little. After a bit of that it turned into some medium gushes. Got to the hospital at 7:30am and baby was born at 5:30pm

My water broke at 9:30pm and my contractions started right away about 2 min apart and very painful I would not have been able to drive myself to the hospital I made it to the hospital around 11pm I was about 8cm dilated a little after midnight and baby was born at 4am Everyone’s different and a lot of people’s waters don’t break on their own at all

Love the responses! Thank you ladies for sharing 💕

Waters broke unexpectedly on 39+4 at 0230 but with no contractions (they didn't start for another 22 hours, so I was surprised). Felt like a slow trickle I couldn't control and had to wear a pad for the rest of the day as I just kept leaking x

Mine never broke (on its own). I started having light contractions consistently so I headed to the hospital and after 14 hours and an inducing pill, I was dilated to a 6 and it still hadn't broke. Doctor showed up, broke my water and said I was ready to push. So, very different than the movies.

I felt a pop and it gushed out all over my bed. You don’t have to rush in as soon as your waters break, just let the hospital know. If contractions arnt well established after 24 hours you’ll be induced. Sometimes waters don’t break until you’ve been in eatables labour for ages and baby is about to come out. It’s different for everyone

It's only about 15% of labours that start with waters breaking, and the baby can even be born with the amniotic sac intact (en-caul). Mine didn't break until I was actively pushing my daughter out, and I was in the pool so I didn't even notice it happened

The average active labour lasts 8-12 hours, and so you’ll have plenty of time to make sure he’s with you when your LO arrives . I would really recommend you get some antenatal education to help you understand the labour process a bit more, so you know what to expect the honest midwife offer a free online class which you might find helpful, it’s UK based but would still have lots of helpful information - here’s a link to her website: https://www.letstalkbirthandbaby.co.uk/live-online-antenatal-classes/labour-birthelp
