Waters broken!!!

Hi guys, 39+1 and my waters broke last night around 10pm. We went to triage and they said if I haven’t started having contractions within 24 hrs they’ll suggest an induction (I absolutely do not want this). Any advice on how to get things going naturally? Or experiences on how long it took labour to come on naturally after water breaking? I am getting mild period pains and have had them since about midnight!

With my first my waters broke 7hrs before contractions started so hang in there 💕

Stay active, spend time on an exercise ball, walk lots. Also sit reversed on the toilet! If you still haven’t gone into labour and don’t want to be induced ask them about the possibility of antibiotics and fetal monitoring while you wait a bit longer

As above. Also make sure you are continuing to eat and drink well. If your body has nothing to work with everything slows down and make sure you rest and relax when you need to

My waters broke 38+5 at 4:30pm and I began getting contractions by 10pm - however by the morning they were every 3 to 4 minutes and I went to the hospital and I wasn’t even dilated - therefore by the 24 hour period I accepted the induction. Try and stay up right and on your feet as much as possible to help gravity do its thing - I think that’s where I went wrong as by the time I went into hospital I needed consistent monitoring to ensure baby wasn’t distressed therefore couldn’t move as much as I’d like xx

90-100% women go into labour in 48hrs, so if you are strongly against induction breathe with ease that you don't have to. That being said you cannot have any vaginal examinations, of course no sex, nothing goes in due to risk of infection and monitor baby if they are moving as usual/well and if you feel well. That has been my plan since a while if my waters break firstm 48hrs I'm comfortable to wait, after that would have to think hard what is the best option for me and baby Xx

Something I've have done with all but my first 2 babies (my first 2 were my only hospital babies. While my last 3 and this one due on the 22nd are all home births) is walk alot and also, the BEST advice I ever had in labor from my midwife assistant is to hold onto the kitchen counter and do some light squats while lightly moving your hips back side to side. It helps use gravity to bring baby down more. And man, it REALLY helped me get things moving. I'm usually already in early labor when I do this. But I can imagine it can help in your case too. Gravity and moving around are gonna be your best friends. Wish you luck and CONGRATULATIONS!

Move! I cleaned the house (lightly, nothing too strenuous) had a few showers and cleaned the shower while I was in there, put on a playlist and folded up all the washing etc. I had strong contractions all day (water broke at 2:30) and although I didn’t get a VBAC like I wanted, I’m really proud of myself for that time at home.

Guys thank you soooo much for all of your helpful advice, I will not be accepting an induction today and just see how it goes until tomorrow evening at the earliest. The midwife did say she thinks she’s back to back which is why my waters have probably gone first and I’ve not had contractions, so I’m going to take all the advice you’ve given me Thank you! Xx

Your experience sounds very much like the start of mine. My waters broke on Friday 27th at 7am, I went to triage and they confirmed they had broken but I had no contractions either and baby’s heart rate was dropping at certain points they had to repeat it later so I went back in 4 hours after this was then like 10pm, contractions were coming but they said I was only 3cm dilated. Anyway then there was no space on a private room so I ended up moving hospitals (not ideal) my contractions started getting really close together to the point I thought I was close to birth but they said I was 4cm so I was out on the hormone drip ( like you I didn’t want anything like that) I had to have the epidural to manage the pain and then Sunday morning 48 hours after my waters broke I was fully dilated and was pushing for the max time but baby wasn’t moving to the right position so unfortunately I had c section which again was something I didn’t want and was so s cared

Anywua the point is to share my experience as it sounds similar and I am honestly the worst for anxiety and worrying but I managed to get through it by the support of my partner and midwife’s, sometimes baby decides what happened but I’m here now 11 days after. My baby was bang on a week ahead of his due date born in the Sunday at lunchtime so I had over 48 hours of broken waters which was the risk for infection. Just trust they they have your best interested at heart even if it’s not what you wanted x

Make sure they give you antibiotics if you go over 24hrs! My daughter and I ended up with Sepsis and a stint in NICU for 9 days at 41+6 gestation. Not fun! All we had was a ‘sorry we were short staffed’ afterwards!

Already risk of infection doesn't i crease u til 72 hours with broken waters, look at the nice guidelines , you don't HAVE to be induced after 24. Saying that, relax get the oxytocin going, when mine went and contractions didn't start I built up the crib, ate a Sunday lunch, watched friends and laughed a lot. Went for a little walk then went to bed. Thjbgs ramped up the following night and baby was here 32 hours from my waters going x
