Engagement

I’m confused…. Had my appt and my midwife said I’m 2/5 engagement. I’ve been looking online some say that it’s 2/5 of the baby’s head into the cervix others say 3/5 of the baby’s head is into the cervix. Others then say 2/5 is near enough fully engaged as there is only 1/5 to go? Does someone know what’s actually correct? Thank you

I’m a student midwife and even I get confused, especially because different trusts and different people say it in different ways. But generally this was how I was taught… 2/5 Engaged = 2/5 of baby’s head is engaged and 3/5 can be felt above the pelvis 2/5 Palpable = 3/5 of baby’s head is engaged and 2/5 can be felt above the pelvis But it’s nothing to do with your cervix and it’s your pelvis that baby’s head is entering. I wouldn’t stress about engagement anyway as it has no correlation to labour especially in first time mums who will likely be engaged for several weeks before labour begins, or baby will pop in and out of the pelvis.

Thank you, he didn’t say if it was as engaged or palpable he just said 2/5 so I’ll ask next time I see him in 2 weeks x

You know what I'm confused too. My baby has been 2/5 in for a few weeks and I've had 3 appointments in that time (just due to a hospital trip too) midwife last week (all be it a more experienced one) felt and said "oh she is down there" and explained that 3/5 were in my pelvis. Then the midwife yesterday felt the same thing and said 2/5 is in and 3/5 out. On my notes its noted on the "engagement" section. Although I have read they can bob in and out of engagement can't they? Right now I'm basing it on the pain and discomfort I can feel when she moves and the lightening crotch which has intensified ten fold! 😬
