Baby suddenly more fussy and sicky

Baby boy is 4 weeks old and has always been really good with his bottles (I exclusively pump). But now all of a sudden he seems super hungry, wolfs them down while spitting it out, cries for more and then is sick afterwards. Is this normal? Is he having a growth spurt or something? It's just a bit distressing as it seems to be giving him painful gas as he's eating so fast and never burps but I don't know what to do to help him.

You could try pace feeding??

@Isa we do 😩 he still wolfs it down inbetween. He acts like he's never been fed before and he's starving!

Are you feeding on demand? 🤔

What size teat are you using? It sounds like he is drinking too quickly which his tummy can’t handle so his body is rejecting it x

I think they go through a leap around 4 weeks so that could be why he’s more unsettled!

I would suggest changing the teat on the bottle to a slower flowing one. We had to do this with my little boy as he would drink so hard he’d choke on the milk. It helps them to slow down as they need to work harder to get the milk out. My boy is 8 weeks and he’s still on the number 1 teat…

@Isa we offer every 3 hours but feed sooner if he shows hunger cues.

@Abi @Amanda I wondered this but he's still on the size 1 slow flow. Is there a even slower one I can try?

@Megan I had heard this and wondered if it could be this as its very out of character for him

To be honest I don't think it's a teat issue if he is still on 1 and has been for a while.. it is probably a growth spurt/leap and I would just do what you are doing and continue :) x

@Kim if you’re using MAM bottles there’s a size 0! :) x

@Isa yeah you're probably right, he's just suddenly grown out of newborn size so I know he's getting bigger. Just horrible seeing him stressed.

@Abi oh thank you, I'll order one to try and see if that makes a difference :)

We have just experienced exactly this with our boy who will be 4 weeks tomorrow, it lasted a few days and now seems to have settled but he is also drinking less milk too so we are thinking a growth spurt which has now settled back down. Hopefully the same happens for you! It was a struggle to see him so upset and uncomfortable but hang on in there, it sounds like you're doing the right things - or at least what our midwives also suggested we do!

@Kim not sure if you have it already but there’s an app called Wonderweeks and it gives you all the information on leaps etc. 🥰
