Colostrum for the hospital

Hi, for those who have been lucky to be able to harvest colostrum how much did you take into hospital with you?

I took about 40ml with my first but didn’t use it all as I either was working on baby latching or also expressing in the hospital. In the end I probably used about 15 syringes that I collected and expressed about 20 in the hospital. I was there for 3 days

I think I brought 10-20ml in 1ml oral syringes. I had more at home in case, since once thawed in the fridge you have to throw them out after 24 hours. And thank goodness we brought them because I had an emergency c section and was too groggy and anxious to nurse for the first 12 hours. We didn’t end up using all of it either! Now I have a good leftover supply at home to put into bottles when someone is watching him and I’m not able to BF.

I took 5 little syringes in a travel cold bag. The docs did end up using some as we had a few hiccups after my c section and we were apart for 4 hours. I was so glad I had them with me. I had more in the freezer at home which my partner would have collected had anything gone horribly wrong x

Also make sure your hospital has a mini fridge in the pp suite! If not, bring a cooler for sure!

I took 10 ml and my partner ended up bringing more in (30mls total) as my little girl was in intensive care for a few days and struggling to breastfeed. It was a god send having it with us

I took 6x 4ml used them all in our 24 hour PP stay. Transported them frozen so didn't need a cool bag and went straight in the ward fridge

I took 20ml in one ml syringes and used about 14ml of them, the rest were not used! I had more at home so didn’t mind getting rid (I collected over 150ml)

I ended up having to get all of mine brought in, I only took a small amount but I was having twins & had expressed about 120ml all together so ended up using it all ☺️.

I had 60 syringes in total and took 30 😅 i only used 4 there and was in for 36 hours

I didn’t bother, they said they don’t have the facilities to store the colostrum while I’m there, I was in for over 24 hrs before my son actually came and by then it would have gone off.. my son couldn’t latch right when he came out and I spent the next 2 days harvesting colostrum with a syringe once he was in my arms! I don’t even know why they gave me the syringes in pregnancy if I wouldn’t be able to bring them for after birth!

My husband got confused and bought in 100ml (I was 2 weeks overdue so did lots) and actually used most of it - baby took a few days to latch properly after csection

Amazing thanks all! I've only got about 6ml harvested and don't want to waste it if it defrosts! 39+2 and no signs of baby, so I'll keep going to get more and I'll check in with the hospitals facilities 😀

Does it hurt harvesting it? I didn’t even know this was a thing until I saw this post 😅

I took 30ml in 1ml syringes.

@Parmis not at all just hand expressing. I would leak colostrum but I never collected it for storage in case. I pumped it tho to induce myself for labor and I gave birth 2 days later lol

I took about 5ml, I didn't use any of it
