This may be a stupid question…

But when exactly during going into labor do you go to the hospital? My doctor told me to contact her when my contractions are 5 mins apart for 2 hours, but do I decide to go to the hospital when that occurs or before then? I feel kind of stupid for asking but FTM here and I feel like I’m clueless about these sort of things. PS I am not having contractions yet or anything like that, I just kind of want to know so I’m not trying to figure it out when I do.

FTM as well, they usually say the 5-1-1 rule however I think when you feel it too strong and consistent you want to head over because it takes time to be triaged and all that. Plus some women have very short labor and some don’t and you don’t know where you will fall. When you feel ok this is a lot I need to head over just go.

Well don’t feel stupid because I’m on my 4th and I still don’t know, with my third I went to the hospital when my contractions were 5 minutes apart they still had me sit and wait in the waiting area! Super disappointed and I’m traumatized! This time I do plan on waiting a little longer, I’ll ask my doctor. What I would say is when you do start having contractions definitely give your doctor a call to see if you’re good to go, you don’t want to just be sitting there, and they aren’t doing anything for you.

After you've reached the end of those 2 hours of having contractions 5 min apart, start timing from the start of every contraction. Don't be surprised if they still turn you away, they did with my 1st, and I was 5-1-1 for about 90 mins. I stayed in for an hour for them to check me again, left about midnight, but was only 3cm dilated. Went home came back the next morning at 8am and was 4 cm and admitted

Thank you ladies! All this is helpful to hear. I truly don’t wanna go and have them send me home or make me wait, so hearing these things helps with my anxiety for sure!

With my son, I waited till my contractions were like 1-2 minutes apart. When I got to L&D I was 6 cm, so I was admitted. I was terrified of getting sent home 😂! This time, because I ended up in a c-section with my first, they want me to come in faster to monitor me more closely because of risk to my scar (attempting a VBAC this time)

My contractions were never 5-1-1. And they would get closer together and then further away my whole labor so it was a very confusing time. I went in at 4pm got checked was 1cm given a morphine shot and sent home. At 9am the next morning I lost my mucus plug, labored at home until 2pm then got admitted at 3.5cm with bloody show. Had her at 10pm that night
