Iron infusion

Has anyone gotten an iron infusion because of anemia? Did you have to request it or did the midwife/doctor offer?

I was given an infusion when I was hospitalised with anaemia. I think you’ll need to be in a hospital setting for it to be administered.

I had one on Wednesday morning. I had been on iron tablets but my ferritin level was still dropping and low. My midwife gave me the choice of increasing the tablets until I saw her again in 3 weeks or the infusion. I chose the infusion as I get random episodes of anaemia anyway (pre pregnancy) and want to get on top of it sooner, rather than trying increased tablets, repeat bloods then potentially being in the same position again. The actual infusion took 30 mins, then had to wait an hour after to make sure I was okay x

I had my second one yesterday. The midwife requested it after my blood results showed I was severely anemic x

How did you feel during/after? Got mine today and just worrying about side effects x

@Mel I felt fine during and after. I've since had repeat bloods and the infusion brought my ferritin up a lot which I have definitely noticed x

@Sophie that’s great, I’m so glad it’s helped hun ❤️

Hi all! I’ve just started on oral iron and I can’t tolerate them at all - Ive had severe sickness throughout pregnancy. What were your numbers to warrant getting an iv infusion? ( hb and Ferritin )

Thanks 🙏🏻

@Roisin mine was 98 (or 9.8) I think diff trusts use different ways of the number nowadays x

Thanks Mel!
