Carrying to term - Nathaniel’s Story

My first pregnancy was going well aside from some nausea up until my 12 week appointment. During the NT scan, my baby was diagnosed with acrania and anencephaly. We saw a MFM high risk doctor the same day for a more detailed ultrasound, and they confirmed the diagnosis. We were told the baby had a 20% chance of making it full term and no chance of survival after birth. My husband and I decided against termination and chose to carry our child for as much time as God would give us and never once regretted that decision. We shared the news with friends and family and threw a big gender reveal party. We celebrated and loved Nathaniel and made beautiful memories with him while I was pregnant. The rest of my pregnancy went smoothly. I developed polyhydramnios (high amniotic fluid) but it never got to a dangerous level. I planned for a C-section to avoid trauma to Nathaniel’s head and hopefully improve my chance of a live birth. Nathaniel was born on September 15, 2023 via c-section at 37 weeks and 5 days. He weighed 4 lb 7 oz and was 16 inches long. He made the sweetest little noises and snuggled up on my chest. He held his dad’s hand tightly and passed away peacefully after about an hour. He only knew love. His precious little life brought more joy than words can express. I believe Nathaniel is now in Heaven, and I find comfort in my faith and belief that I will go to Heaven someday as well.
