Breastfeeding

Anyone have any advice? My 2 week old seems to be getting too much milk when feeding, he often coughs or splutters after, and brings some of it back up. It’s not sick like, it’s still very much just milk that he hasn’t swallowed yet. He’s putting weight on perfectly and a very happy and content baby, I’m just worried I’m drowning him with the boobies!!!

If you have a fast flow, I was recommended to either hand express / express a little using a haakaa pump before putting my baby on the boob, so it’s a bit more manageable for him. Your supply will regulate after a few weeks and then it should stop being an issue.

I rang the NCT breast feeding helpline in tears for the exact same reason. They suggested to lay back more when feeding so the flow isn't so strong and also to use a cold compress to reduce the amount of milk- don't do this a lot but just to help regulate. They were amazing help xx

@Sophie thank you for your advice! X

I had this with my second a few years back. The rugby ball hold fixed it for me x

We have this too, I put her on until I feel the letdown then I take her off and catch it with a muslin and relatch her once it’s stopped spraying, this seems to work well for us combined with laying back more when feeding xx
