EBF constipation

Has anyone else’s baby suffered with constipation while being exclusively breastfed? I’ve spoken to the health carer and they said it’s fine for them to not go regularly (up to one week) but she’s uncomfortable in between and wakes up in pain at night 😔

Hi molly sorry to hear this. It’s so frustrating I’ve been there myself, before weaning my boy would only go once a week regular as clockwork always on a Sunday. Nothing I could do changed that pattern, now he is 9 months and weaned he goes daily sometimes twice a day. My health visitor said as long as wet nappies not to worry. But like your daughter I could tell he was in discomfort, but no amount of belly rubs leg cycles warm baths made him go anymore frequently we just had to ride it out. Sorry I can’t give any advice on a method to help

I’m the same and the midwife’s sent me to the hospital to be checked at the weekend because of this. The consultant said that apparently it is fairly normal in the first few weeks after giving birth for breastfed babies but no less worrying for us mammas. I’ve been doing the bicycle legs and tummy massage to help with her feeling uncomfortable 😣 I hope she goes a bit more regularly soon 🤞🏻 x

Thank you, good to hear it’s not just us, it’s just frustrating when you feel like you can’t help them 😔 I’ve tried Gripewater but she’s not keen on it so hard to make sure she’s getting enough and even then I’m not sure whether it works or not!

Hey, I had this issue! How old is baby? My boy was used to doing one poo a day and then we were on day 2 of no poo and he seemed so fussy and nothing seemed to help him. I then heard about windi by fridababy which seemed so scary but we followed the instructions and he ended up doing the mother of all poos!! A pressure point massage on his feet often works too. Hope that helps :)

Thanks @Iqs ill have a look into it. She’s currently 5 months, she was going regularly like every 24 hours until the last week or so and it’s now like once or twice a week but she seems so uncomfortable in between 😔

It’s definitely happened to us, my baby is 5.5 months and EBF and sometimes he goes two days without pooping and sometimes when he does that he gets fussy and stuff and I just try to help him pass gas because that usually helps him. But yeah, I’ve read that it’s normal that they go up to a week without pooping.
