It’s been rough today

Out of the blue our 3 month old starts screaming (like screeching, red face, drooling) when my husband tried to change his diaper. He was inconsolable for a couple of hours, I feel anxious just thinking about it now. I had to swaddle and rock him for a couple of hours to soothe him. We gave him gas drops and even Tylenol in case he was sensing pain from who knows what. He would not take the paci or bottle or boob. Stopped when he fell asleep. He got up once to feed like nothing happened. Waiting for him to wake up soon and I’m scared for my life that he will start screaming again. How do parents with colicky kids deal with this! Is it colic spell or should I be looking into it with his pediatrician? I’m traumatized! What do you do to stop the screaming?

I'd make sure it wasn't something else but at that age I'd be guessing purple crying would be most likely.

It's going to happen and it probably won't be the last time. Sometimes you never really know why they are crying. Could have been a bit of diaper rash, could have been an accidental scratch or a gas bubble or maybe he woke with a start and it scared him. The best you can do is make sure they are comfortable, fed, changed, not sick, etc. If nothing is wrong then sometimes you just have to wait it out. The important thing is to try and stay calm yourself. Babies use us to regulate, and if you are stressed and upset, your body will be stressed and upset and baby will feel it. Do your best to project calm and confidence as much as you can (I know it can be hard).

Thank you, I do some mindful breaths when I’m stressed out so he gets (I hope) the “calm” lol. He has been a bit fussy today but nothing like last night. This is also leap 3 for him so I think he is going through the big changes. I’ve been with him all day with only 3 hour sleep and then the complete meltdown at the end was overwhelming. Thanks ladies for responding!
