@Ellie Yes he’s learning those he’s only 3 months old right now so I’m trying to remember that. We would like him to eventually be fluent and not just learn baby sign so I don’t know if anyone had any advice for that?
Yes! Signs helped us so much! Milk, all finished, please, food, were the signs my kid learned the earliest. Outside, airplane, shoes, and more quickly followed. I find signing the word whenever I said it help my kid learn them. She would use them to talk to me even when she understood my spoken words. I think for my kid especially the signs are easier to use than the spoken words.
My daughter is 13.5 months and started signing I think around 6-8 months but only for milk at that time. Since like 11 months she signs so much more. She now can do milk, hi, bye, more, thank you, please, eat, sleep, all done, water, & she says several words. But she didn’t get good at signing till 10-11 months! And she picks up on them so fast now. You’re doing great! He’s still really little but keep at it!
I would so love tips on how to get started with this! I actually know some makaton, but would love to get tips on how to actually get my son to understand / repeat signs x
@Erin I started by signing milk to my kid every time I fed her. It wasn't long before she associated the two. Same with the other signs. Give the sign, do the action/give them the object, then make the sign again.
@Erin my son’s only 3 months old but he does recognize the signs we do all the time with him. He just isnt able to actually do the sign yet seeing as he’s still so little. We watch Mrs Rachel for sign and a a couple of others. I just ordered an ABCs sign chart along with flashcards and a signing book. I’m also learning as well so it’s easier for him to pick up. Words I know and learn I’m always signing to him.
@MaryKate thank you! He is starting to recognize the signs we do everyday but obviously can’t do them himself. I’m trying to learn myself so I can sign as I speak to him so he learns that way as well.
I’m teaching my son things he seems to be struggling with in speech - more, please, sorry, help. He can say mum/dad/thank you really well so focusing on the things he struggles to communicate. His frustration has improved so much

@MaryKate yes! I think it’s good for them to learn. And it helps them communicate so much better
@Kenzie I agree!! And I’d love for her to become fluent in it and be able to communicate with others in her future that sign, I wish I could. I’m hoping to learn as she does😅

@Kenzie it definitely takes time but if you work on one sign at a time that young eventually he’ll pick it up fast. My daughter learned please and thank you in one day

My daughter is only 4 months, but I plan to teach her, yes! Guess I should start now, huh? lol I’d like her to learn every that I know!
My daughter is only 4months I’ve been doing milk everyday, she now knows what it is and get excited n she’s trying to move her hand but hasn’t got it quite yet that’s the only sign I’ve been doing tho I plan to do more when she’s 6months.
