Am I doing the right thing?

Hi everyone, Congratulations to all the fellow Mummies out there who have had their October babies already! I’m so lucky with my baby. At just over 2 weeks old, we already have a good 3 hour routine between waking for feeds - night time included! However, my baby will only settle for sleep again suckling on the breast for comfort. Is this a bad habit? Should I consider training to settle another way or should I just allow him to take the lead as we’re very early days?

It’s very normal for babies to fall asleep on the breast. My boy does it all the time. The hormones from breastfeeding makes them sleepy. Have you had cluster feeds yet? This will throw your 3-hour pattern out of whack for a few days but is also perfectly normal 💙

not a bad habit at all, as jodie above said, it's very normal! my newborn falls asleep while feeding, and it's still how i get my 2 year old to get to sleep. i'd allow baby to take the lead for now, and if at some point you find that feeding to sleep etc no longer works for you, then look at making changes. but while it works for you, stick with it! as i said, this still works really well for us even with our 2 year old xx

There’s nothing wrong with feeding to sleep but if you want your partner to be able to get your baby to sleep if you’re not there, then it might be worth introducing expressed milk in a bottle or have your partner find their own way of getting baby to sleep. This isn’t of course required, but I struggled as my son would only fall asleep with me for 3 years and I never got a break so wish I’d pushed other associations at the beginning. At the same time, your baby might easily adjust to other associations later, but mine unfortunately didn’t.

Babies fall asleep feeding, it’s a natural thing. You defiantly don’t need to worry about creating bad habits this early on! You can change the way they fall asleep (if you want/need to) in the future! X

So normal, natural and very healthy, it’s what our bodies are designed to do and it sounds like you’re doing a fantastic job x

I used to feed my daughter to sleep for 2 years :-) She now just falls asleep next to me without feeding :-)
