NICU with toddler sibling

I’m currently expecting twins, due in December but one of my twins will need surgery at birth and significant NICU time. Unfortunately not our first nicu time as my 2 year old had the same, but our first time with siblings in tow. My healthy twin will be allowed into nicu whenever and 2 year old will be able to visit. Obviously not the best place for a 2 year old and I will minimise the time spent there but I think it’s important he spends some time with his brother. I’m trying to get organised and buy him a little bag of things to entertain him there but looking for ideas of things that aren’t noisy and won’t get everywhere /generally advice on how to juggle one in nicu with other children at home

I would double check that your toddler will be allowed to visit. In the US (or at least at our hospital NICU) kids under 14 were not allowed to visit NICU during RSV season. Just something to check into! What about a busy book? I recommend the subreddit NICU parents they have a lot of great ideas and support.

@Ryann he is allowed but only at certain times. He has this busy book already so has kind of lost interest. Maybe a slightly different one

Or stickers!

Also the Tonie Box things maybe? I don’t know if you can use headphones with those or not

@Ryann fab thanks so much for these! We have a yoto which he can use headphones with

@Alice you’re welcome and good luck with baby’s surgery when they arrive I hope everything goes well! ❤️

@Alice have you checked with your NICU’s March of Dimes Coordinator? They may have a little sibling gift or busy box that they can put together. Also, maybe use one of the drawers to house his things so that he always has a space too. (Just make sure not to leave valuables behind and keep an inventory.) 😊
