Breastfeeding always hurt?

Even if baby has a good latch, will breastfeeding always hurt for the first week or so? Baby was born yesterday afternoon and the midwives aren’t being super helpful so I’m waiting to go home and meet with the infant breastfeeding team. In the meantime, me and baby were separated for about 3 hours after birth because I had to have placental removal surgery. He had some colostrum from a syringe, supplemented by formula. When reunited, baby doesn’t open his mouth super wide and therefore is latching shallow. However I’ve since managed to get him to have a deeper latch and it is still uncomfortable, with occasional sharp pain. Is that normal in the first week/couple of days?

Mine got better when my milk came in and when I had some support with position/latch. It was unbearable the first few days as he was sucking so hard to get the colostrum out (and cluster feeding) I got the silver nipple cups and wore them permanently for a few days and that seemed to help! Now a week old and when it’s a good latch it feels fine. Occasionally sharp when he latches. You can tell the difference quite quickly of a good/bad latch once you’ve felt a good one!

The midwifes said it can take a while for the nipples to harden, so some pain at the start of every feed for the first couple weeks or so is to be expected. As long as it isn't hurting the full length of the feed x

@Abi thank you!! Yeah that seems to mane sense as when I express, I’m still unable to get some so he must be sucking super hard 😭 I will hopefully be going home today and so I’ll call the infant team. Thanks for the tip on the silver nipple shields too. My Amazon purchases are just about to start 😂

@Sam yeah at the moment it’s hurting/uncomfortable for the whole feed and when he pops off my nipple is slanted, indicating a bad latch 😭

Haha my day 1-4 Amazon orders were out of control!

@Abi 😂😂 i know right! You just remember all the things that you need to get (and some comfort purchases)

Breastfeeding hurt for the first six weeks for me despite my son having a perfect latch/ no tongue tie

Yeah that sounds uncomfortable! Seems like a good idea to speak to a lactation consultant/ breastfeeding specialist when you get out of hospital xx

When my little boy first latches, it’s toe curling! But after about 10 seconds the sensitive disappears and it’s fine. I breastfed my first baby too and remember it well. Eventually that initial pain will go, but if yours is hurting the whole way through the feed then it’s an incorrect latch x

@Becca oh wow really 🥹🥹 any tips for coping? I’ve just bought some silverettes and some nipple cream

@Becki ahhh right! That’s a good measure. I’m conscious of the fact that he’s less than 24 hours old so it’s very early days! Hoping that it will get better

Nipple shields helped me and honestly just practise! Breastfeeding takes time to learn for both mum and baby. My nipple would flatten after feeds which indicated a problem with latching but every lactation consultant said he was great at it. It does get easier eventually 💗

I was in agony between day 2 and 4 when my milk first came in and I was super engorged, despite having a great latch it was still agony! Your nipples have never taken such a beating before, whether it’s a good latch or not, the physical strain of the sucking will cause tenderness! I started wearing silver cups 24/7 and hand expressing a small amount to soften the engorgement and now we’re on day 13 having a great time!!! Silver cups 1000% changed my experience! X

It’s so painful to begin with. Just keep applying Lansolin or Vaseline. It gets better. I’m 5 weeks PP and sometimes painful now but mostly fine x
