my babe also only nurses for like 5 mins at a time before she gets distracted lol. I just leave the breast available for her to turn back and latch as many times as she wants until she is done. she can sometimes go 4 or so hours between feeds
My girl is 5 1/2 months and weighs 14 lbs too, she’ll eat for 5mins then if I switch sides she’ll eat for maybe another 2-3 minutes. They get more efficient as they get older. Long as she seems satisfied I wouldn’t worry
As long as diapers and weight gain are good I wouldn’t worry too much. Some babies can get what they need in just 5-10 min. My son is 5 and a half months old and averages about 6-9 min nursing each time. And starts getting distracted around 5 min. He used to eat for 18-25 min each time but he got more efficient as he grew.
My girl is 5 months this week and 14 lbs. eats 3-8 minutes at a time. I have incredibly fast flow and that’s all she needs! Took a while to feel comfortable with but the pediatrician and lactation specialist said it as all good cause she is gaining weight and happy 🥰
Is your baby getting solids in now? Maybe baby is liking solids more now. I think this happens at this stage. Mine is 6 months and is more interested in solids now.
My girl will be 5 months on the 23rd and she eats 7 minutes, max. She weighs 15.5lbs. So it’s normal. They are just more efficient eaters at this age.
Same thing happened to me. My girl is 5 months old weights 15.5lbs and she only nurses for 5-6minutes. I started to give her a bottle with pumped milk and now she eats 5.5/6oz of milk every 2.5/3hours. I know for sure she wasn’t getting that much from my boob cause it takes me 20 min to pump 5/6oz of milk. She has always had plenty of wet diapers and on track for weight gain but I felt she wasn’t eating enough and started giving her more with bottle just for my peace of mind. I followed my instincts 🤍I still nurse her but now I have a better idea of how much she eats a day. My pediatrician said she should eat between 22 to 28oz a day.
@Debora 🦋 keep in mind babies are much more efficient than any pump though. A healthy breastfeeding infant removes approximately 80% of the total volume in 5 minutes and an efficient breast pump removes 85% in 15 minutes.
@Jelena Yes! My little one empties me SO much quicker than my pump. Sometimes I can only get 3-4oz in 30 minutes on the pump, but when I do weighted feeds, she is getting 5.5-6oz in 5-10 minutes.
@Bethany amazing! I EBF so I only have ever used a haakaa to collect/save excess breastmilk, but I’ve heard from so many doctors about how much more efficient babies are than pumps!
5 Mins and mine is 17lbs 🥲. He is a serious FOMO baby and I can’t keep him latched at all ever. I just offer it frequently. He eats about every two hours. As long as they are gaining and having at least 4-6 wet diapers a day they are fine.
@Madison my boy is 5.5 months and 18.5lbs 🤣 he gets soo easily distracted so I have to relatch him constantly lol but he only eats for 5-10 min every 2.5-3 hours
My son used to eat for ages (45 mins!) when he was younger. Now that he’s almost 5 months, he usually eats for 5-10 mins (unless he dozes). I agree with what everyone else has said. As long as diapers and weight gain are normal, your little one is okay!!
the most important things are her weight gain and diaper output. how many wet diapers in a day? and how often are you nursing?
