Alternative Milks

My little one is EBF and 6 months now. Can I use oat milk as an alternative when making up baby rice / porridge etc.? Can’t express enough for it and don’t want to start formula just to mix it in. (Obviously aware that oats are an allergen)

Yes you can 😊

In food yes, but not as a drink x

@Sophie do you know how much is recommended to start with?

soya milk is recommended over oat tho. As long as baby doesn’t have a soya allergy x

@Hannah yeah of course, I just meant to have something to mix in

@Hannah oh really? Do you know why? I currently use oat milk as my alternative as I need to be dairy free because of breastfeeding. Would be easier to use what we already have but will change to soya if we need to

I’m trying to upload the screenshot but I don’t know if you can see it 🤦🏻‍♀️ x

@Hannah that’s helpful thank you! Weaning with CMPA is a minefield and nerve wracking… terrified of other allergies

We used oat milk in his foods from 6 months, then at 13 months switched from BF to oat milk as a drink. Our dietician said the Alpro Growing Up milk was the “gold standard” but there are cheaper versions available. Also, our boy LOVES the oat milk; I tried a bit and it’s so creamy, no wonder

@Fay Alpro growing up oat or soya?

@Annabel do you have a dictation? Ours has been sooo helpful so I have lots of tips if you need any help xx

@Hannah we do but I don’t feel like they were very knowledgeable. Lots of ‘I’ll have to ask a colleague’ and ‘I haven’t heard that one before’. It was only 1 telephone appointment too. Very grateful for any tips!

@Annabel ah that’s a shame ours is soo good I email her all the time with questions 🤣 if you send me your email address I can send you over the NHS CMPA weaning guide. The best thing she told us to do it introduce one food at a time for 3 days in a row to check for allergies. My little one is allergic to dairy & soy. And he had a mild reaction to legumes & sweet potato!

@Hannah I’ll send you a message with it thank you! We’ve done 11 veg so far but haven’t done them for 3 days and then moved on to the next, but I’m thinking I’m going to because his eczema has flared up with weaning too so it’s hard to tell reactions. I don’t think he’s particularly had anything they usually react to but you never know!

We were told to use oat milk over soy because the proteins in cows milk and soy milk are very similar - low and behold, my little one has a soy allergy more severe than dairy.

I used oat from 6 months for food, as I was dairy free and it was what I had at home (only alt milk I could bare)

@Kya yeah I’m not a fan of soya milk… tempted to do oat milk but soya yogurt which I don’t mind
