Do you ever notice that people who brand themselves as the most progressive people loving person are the opposite in reality?

My sister is super liberal "friend of everything everyone" kind of person. But then she'll reveal her true nature sometimes on accident like a slip up. A friend was talking about a women who didn't finish the hiking trail PCT because she was raped and my sister who is "progressive" goes "well maybe she just said that because she didn't want to finish the trail" šŸ˜¶šŸ˜Æ. Or recently when I was struggling with ppd she goes "well can't you just like try harder?" Her actual actions do not match all the talk.

idk maybe this is an issue unique to your sisterā€¦ she sounds weird

Yup. Definitely noticed every liberal I known showed their true colors and it's not all dandy after all.

@Morgan Just an example. I've noticed this time and time again with others as well.

One of my former friends (white woman) who is married to a black man said that the reason why black people wore masks during the pandemic is because ā€œcanā€™t see my face, canā€™t catch a caseā€ šŸ˜³ Like WHAT!? Bc all black people are criminals? Among a whole slew of other things she would say that I thought were racist personally, and they are liberal. šŸ™ˆ Iā€™m more of in the middle but my whole family is liberal and again they say the most racist shit I have ever heard.

@Essie šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡ø same with my family. They're hard-core liberals but they'll always make a point to announce that someone they were talking to was black, but they'll say African American and whisper it like it's a naughty word. I'm like, Wtf are you doing šŸ« ?

I think it's not really a liberal thing. It's about being incongruous and liberal or not we all have our duality. It's not about politics, it's about our conscious and unconscious parts of ourselves.

Ehh..for sure thereā€™s hypocrisy and pretense in people. I notice it regardless of their political affiliation. You can say the same of the god loving alt right who is supposed to be pretty accepting according to their Christian teachingsā€¦but have proven to be the opposite. Iā€™m somewhere in the middle too. I have no issue seeing the bs of both sides.

Sometimes I really do find that those who imagine themselves to be the most progressive or liberal, are often actually very rigid in their views. This rigidity can extend into a particular brand of intolerance, as well as a kind of narcissistic ignorance to this intolerance. I think a hallmark of this kind of mindset is thinking that others donā€™t agree or donā€™t fully agree with them because these others are not as educated as them, attributing a difference in opinion to a difference in (and ultimately, a lack of) understanding. Iā€™m a liberal, and feel like Iā€™ve encountered this pretty frequently, especially in certain spaces.

Like someone else said, people are complex beings but the second they hold an opinion which doesnā€™t necessarily fit into their usual narrative theyā€™re labelled as fake. People can be valid in their beliefs or actions even if those seem contradictory to you personally.

Anyone that tries to hard to be something they are not will eventually come to light in truthā€¦it sounds like your sister may just truly not understand or be able to deal with what something traumatizing like a rape or ppd isā€¦continue to enlighten her as it sounds like she could use your perspective.

@Aggs This is so true. I think both ā€œprogressivesā€ and ā€œconservativesā€ have this issue of characterizing the ā€œother sideā€ rather than honoring the fact that individuals are complex and can hold conflicting views.
