Breastfeeding advice please

He’s only 2 days old today and I’m already finding it excruciating. He latched on great in the hospital and being second baby I already could see the colostrum was there few weeks before birth. Naively thought this time would be way easier and less painful, but last night I had to give him a bottle as I couldn’t stand the pain. They are so sore to touch this morning, I’m on the verge of giving up already. Anyone have any advice?

I had this. First day fine and all midwife’s overnight said the latch was good however inside it wasn’t and I had scabby nipples for up to a week it took to heal and get a better latch established. I asked to see the feeding team as we were re admitted but there is often local breastfeeding drop ins run by the health visitors so maybe message yours to see as they can advise and help the latch x we are week 7 now and feeding well with and expressed bottle and night x

Also have you tried the laying down on your side latch. This was the first one I could find comfortable at the sore point x

Has baby been checked for tongue tie as this can cause pain? See if there is a breastfeeding support group near you, otherwise the BFYM Breastfeeding Support Facebook group can offer some help and do a latch check if you send a photo or video of baby feeding

Have you been given a contact number for the infant feeding team? The midwife/ health visitor should be able to direct you to them if not. Also see if there is any peer support breastfeeding groups local. If it’s this painful it may be an issue with the latch so would be worth getting some support with this.

This also happened to me, just try and make sure baby’s mouth is open as wide as it can. And try different positions. Use some of the breast milk to cover your nipples when it’s sore or use a nipple cream or coconut oil to soothe them. If you can fight through the pain it does get easier. My baby is also tongue tied but now feeding fine he’s 12 days old today

I would get the infant feeding team out to support you. I didn’t do this early days when I should have and regret it now x

Thanks everyone, I appreciate all your advice. I’m powering through and using nipple shields today, which is helping. I’ll see the midwife tomorrow for the day 3 check, Will ask her to check for tongue tie, and the feeding team contact details x

I had this aswell by day 9 I was nearly screaming in pain and the anxiety of every feed was so stressful for me and baby, went to specialist checked for tongue tie etc I put so much pressure on myself to do it and had all the guilt of failing etc, but my little one just had small latch, I switched to pumping and honestly the stress just lifted happy mamma, happy baby 😄

@Sarah midwives aren’t anywhere near qualified to check tongue tie so may go missed. I’d contact your feeding team, they’re so much more experienced and equipped to help xx

You could try changing position, so laying down or rugby hold just so its not always the same and it might stop the soreness?

I found the first 2 weeks painful now I love it at 13 weeks

@Rebecca thank you I’m going to get their details x

@Claire I’m definitely going to give this a go too. What pump do you use please? X
