Contact naps

Hi all! Looking for some advice on how to transition from contact naps to cot naps? My LO is 5.5 months old - if we try to cot nap during the day, he will wake up after 20-30 minutes on the dot. Nighttime is great, he goes in his cot either dead asleep or drowsy and puts himself to sleep and sleeps all night. Any advice appreciated!

Can you sneak away during a contact nap or will he wake up?

Just keep trying! They will be short to begin with but over time as you build familiarity with the cot and trust you’ll come back for baby they will lengthen on their own x

@Cecily do you mean during a cot nap? Because yes, but he will wake after 30 minutes

@Yasmin yeah, I do try but he gets cranky haha

We went from contact naps to co-sleeping naps to two beds next to each other naps and then to napping alone!

Start with the first nap of the day, sleep pressure is higher so you’re more likely to see success faster and then you can work on the second afterwards. If baby wakes after 30 do you try and help back to sleep/ contact nap for the second half? X

I do the cot nap then she wakes up 30-45min after and then i get a bottle put her back and contact nap and we both over sleep 2hr. Lol

What im doing is transitioning the first nap as if she only does a short nap she can catch up during the day. I normally try to slip in 5 mins before she is waking up to help her keep the nap (a hand firmly on her chest) but generally this isnt successful. So she has 30-45 mins now - it used to be 20 mins and before that 5... so it is slow but it is a start.

@Yasmin it depends how he wakes. If he wakes up happy and chatty, I get him up - if he wakes cranky I try to save it
