Vaccinations

Hi guys, my baby is having his first vaccinations tomorrow. Should I give him calpol once BEFORE the vaccines or just wait until after? Anyone got any other advice to keep him comfortable during or after? I’m going to ask if I can breastfeed during.

After, if you give it before and the appointment is delayed then you a given a dose when it wasn’t needed, it can also hide if baby does have a temp. Lots of cuddles and pop baby in something that’s easy accessible like a baby grow! Your little one will be just fine xx

We just gave it whilst we were still in with the nurse immediately after her jabs.

Its recommended to give it after you can give it to them straight after or see how they go. I would but baby in something easily accessible to cause less fuss

@Amy thank you! That makes a lot of sense. I’m being a little selfish because I know he’ll be fine, he’s strong!, but I’m more worried about my mental state if he’s fussy over the next few days. 😂😭

Definitely after! I've had it where there has only been 1 GP scheduled for the day (they have to sign off on them being given) and he called in sick and the sister practice kept saying they'd send another Dr to cover and after waiting 3 hrs was still sent home having not been able to have vaccines. Definitely best to wait 💕

@Beth I cried at the nurse with my LG, and the next couple of days she was a velcro baby who basically slept for two whole days but had a bit of an upset belly. Wasn't too bad though. X

I didn’t give my baby anything. Dr said Tylenol if she gets a fever is all after. But she didn’t get a fever and was fine after.

I was told by my doctor not to give my baby anything before or after because it interferes with the body's immune response and decreases the vaccine's effectiveness. But my friend was told before and a few hours after, so I don't think doctors are on the same page.

@Amanda I find this a lot with stories I’ve seen on here: every professional gives different advice/information! I’ll see what my doctor says… he’s quite old fashioned 😅 thanks for the advice!

After and only if the fever gets too high it lasts to long I wouldn’t give as a preventative- my baby never even got a fever or was fussy so it’s better to wait and see how they do before giving meds unnecessarily

Thanks everyone! The health visitor had implied it’s recommended to give calpol so it’s good to hear of your experiences where it wasn’t needed 😊 he has his jabs at 4pm… I’ll update after!

He was fine after a quick scream and he slept for a while. He did his usual 7-9pm scream and then fed to sleep… he’s just woken up and is screaming which is unusual for him 😭 hopefully we can get him to sleep and put him down 😭
