Strong smelling urine

My little girls urine has a really strong ammonia smell today. She isn’t dehydrated as she’s been drinking normally and lots of wet nappies. Haven’t changed brand of nappies either! Has anyone experienced this and have any advice please? x

So there are a lot of factors that could contribute to a strong ammonia smell, most of them are no cause for concern. But one of those may need looking into which is a potential UTI. Even if this is not likely the case or a distant possibility, I think it's always better to get it checked out and rule it out through testing.

I was about to recommend getting tested for UTI also!

We had this! Baby was otherwise himself. We called the GP and had to collect a urine sample which they tested in case of a UTI. All came back clear and he said it’s most likely teething! He said that whilst there isn’t strong research, anecdotally we know that teething impacts the digestive system. One theory for the ammonia smell is that the extra saliva is very acidic, causing the ammonia smell. We’ve had it on and off for about five weeks now. Might be worth getting checked out but it’s probably teething!
