Staying awake

So my baby gets fussy in the night and doesn’t like being in his cot and will only settle on me. I’m really struggling to stay awake and catch myself almost nodding off with him in my arms and it terrifies me. I end up having to just put him in his cot and just hope that he falls asleep in there with me just comforting him whilst he’s next to me. I would love to know how everyone is managing to stay awake through the nights. I have tried having AirPods in and watching tiktoks but it’s really not working! I’m probably going to resort in standing up all night at this rate so he stays asleep to prevent my partner and toddler from waking up 😂

I had a similar issue with my baby. I got a love to dream newborn swaddle and it has been brilliant. She will settle in her moses basket and can stay there for 4-5 hours at a time, waking for a feed and then back down. Definitely worth a try if you haven't already.

Here are some things that may help him to settle. White noise, swaddle, wait until they are asleep then transfer them. Wait until they are in a deep sleep before transferring which can take up to about 25 minutes. You'll need to experiment to see how long it takes for them. Sleep with their crib sheet a night so it smells of you. Warm their crib with a hot water bottle before putting them in... When you are transferring him put him down feet first, then bum, then head last very slowly. Then I put my hands on top of my lo for a few moments until he settles. Hope something helps.

@Rhian definitely worth a try and ordered one! 😂

@Tanya Thankyou for all of this! I’ll be giving them a go!

Whilst all the above tips are amazing and definitely worth a try; don’t be hard on yourself if it doesn’t work and he’s only happy on you. He’s been part of you for the past 9 months the crib will feel awfully cold and scary no matter what you try! Someone said to me, and I posted this before, but if you could pick between sleeping in the warm arms of someone you love, or alone in a cold bed which would you pick? It doesn’t make the exhaustion any easier; but it does make the situation more understandable.

@Chloe this is a beautiful way to look at it 🩷

It just helps to remind yourself how new they are to the world! 🩵
