The talk?

First time moms to a one and a half year old girl here. At what age do you have that talk about there’s no “dada” or “daddy” in the household? And how do you even talk about it?

We bought books normalizing that all families look different. We also tried to find books and shows that featured families that looked like ours. We talked from the beginning about how she was made. That she has a donor, not a dad. Sometimes it's hard for her being different. But we've also met other LGBTQ+ families, and that helps a lot.

Thanks for sharing. What age was she when you talked to her about it?

1 and up. Reading stories is good at any age really. I also thought it was good for me to get used to talking about it even if she didn't understand yet. As soon as they start watching kids shows they will understand their family is different because nearly every one showcases heterosexual cisgender parents. It's also good for them to always know their birth/creation story to avoid surprises down the road.
