Newborn burp + sleep

My second baby is 3 weeks old and I don’t know why I worry SO much about her even though she’s perfect according to the hospital and doctors. Here are my worries; 1- She is rarely burping. She could be chugging milk or slowly, each time I try, it doesn’t come out. I try 3-4 positions, i try to do it as soon as she’s done to avoid let her fall asleep on the boob… the thing is that, when she wakes up, she’s fussy because there’s clearly something bothering her so I try to get her to release gas (that works), try to burp again until I hear something or if I dont, i give up. She also, spits A LOT. Is this worrying? Anyone else had this “issue”? 2- She sleeps A LOT. Like probably 18-20hours a day. Her wake windows are not consistent (which I doubt it is at this age) and she drinks good and has great amount of pee/poo. She sleeps through the night, through the day pretty much… is this concerning?

1) does she seem uncomfortable when she eats? If not, she may be a happy spitter. Mine spit up a lot. My mom told me I had an underdeveloped esophageal valve as a baby, and I spit up practically everything for months. It always looks like more than it is. If she is having enough wet diapers, growing fine, and seems generally happy after a feed, it's probably fine. The spitting goes away after a few months. It honestly probably feels good after a big meal. 2) again, is she generally happy when she's awake? Does she have at least one wakeful period during the day where she's alert, attentive, and looking around? Does she focus on your face? Does she pay attention when you talk? Those are good things to watch for, but honestly some babies are more like potatoes for awhile, then they become more alert. My doctor called them lumps. 🤣 I'd say keep trying with the gas, holding her upright for awhile after a feed can help, and also feeding her from a slightly elevated position. Maybe take extra breaks and go slow.

@Melissa love this, thank you so much Melissa!!!!

Sounds like she doesn't need to burp! Also yes normal to be sleeping that much

Sometimes breastfed babies just don’t need to burp. The best burping technique I’ve used is moving them in a circle and then slowly back and forth versus tapping their backs. That always worked for trapped gas. But if she’s happy then don’t worry about it. If she’s sleeping long stretches, say thank you and don’t overthink. Wake windows and routines are good but are super unreliable at such a young age. I never even stressed about routines until they turn one. Their sleep is all over the place until then with all the regressions and developmental changes that impact their sleep. Once she’s fed, has enough wet and dirty diapers, don’t worry about it. One thing I’ll add is my daughter never spit up a lot but my son did a lot. And he also developed eczema around 4-5 months. Dairy in my diet was affecting him. When I cut it out, his spit up stopped. But I think your baby is too young for that to be an issue yet but maybe something to keep in mind if she keeps spitting up.
