When to buy the essentials

Hi girls, I’m 16 weeks today, first time mum & just curious when you bought your essentials. Things like pram, car seat, cot, Moses basket etc. If you also have any recommendations on prams (or literally anything) I’d love to know. Thanks in advance, Sophia x

Hey lovely! We bought travel system around 30 weeks, and bought a snuzpod at 33 weeks (I’m now 35w). To be honest, whilst it’s all worked out, I wish I bought them sooner as I often stressed about having stuff in time, and even now I’m still worried that we don’t have everything as we’re getting closer. I wish I would have started buying much sooner than I did (I started around 24-25 weeks). I think definitely go to a John Lewis and see what feels good for you, then buy online where it’s cheaper - or potentially second hand. I see a lot of people recommending certain ones but when I tested them, I hated them - didn’t feel great, and I needed something that felt good on cobbled streets (due to where I live) and something with a big under storage basket, so we went for the uppababy vista 2. But just see what feels good for you and think of what you want to prioritise xx

Thank you so much! I’ve been buying for our baby for 5 years now. So I’m SO ready to start buying the bigger, essentials 🤣 Thank you so much! Wishing you all the best 💕 xx

i’ve started buying little things, most of the stuff i was kindly gifted by my friends who also have had babies but no longer need the items! x

At around 16 weeks we got the larger items like the pram, baby bouncer, car seat. Then later around 32 weeks we got everything else

I started as soon as I found out I was pregnant so that I didn’t have to rush around at the end and spend a crazy amount of money. I’m currently at 33 weeks and have almost everything in order, just bought a travel system which was one of the harder decisions to make

I started as soon as I found out as well. So much nicer now that I am 36 weeks and everything is done!

I would start ASAP! 🫶 so it's not so overwhelming! But also look into Family Nurse Partnership and local Women's Care centers or other resources and they helped pay for a lot of my major purchases. I got a breastfeeding pillow, crib, really nice glass anti colic bottles, diaper changing station, etc :)

I waited until I was 20 weeks for the majority of things with my first and got things on sale when I saw them.. why wait if they're cheaper when u see them. Last thing to get was the pushchair at about 28 weeks as i had to keep ulit at my MIL as were superstitious about having it in the house b4 baby. I thought I was super organised but i ended up having my son 8 weeks early. I'm pregnant again now. Kept most things but I've got everything by 25 weeks just as this 1 may be early too... I had my first in 3 weeks time so I feel like sticking time bomb.

I bought most things by 20 weeks tbh, I was told it was likely that I'd go into labour early... Personally if I was having another baby I'd skip getting a travel system and go straight to a pushchair that's suitable from birth, ideally one that can parent face and world face, I found that having a travel system was just a nightmare and needed to take the wheels off mine to get it in the car 🤦‍♀️

Ummmm ... 2 hours after those double lines showed up my shopping carts were full 🤣 Baby due in Jan, Oct/Nov I have exams, December is expensive, January is normally a struggle so I started ASAP to spread the cost. Bought all the essentials and left the fun optional things for the family and friends! (We don't have many close by so we probably won't get much anyway)

I would say there’s no right or wrong time and just go with what feels right. I was personally really nervous in a high risk pregnancy so didn’t buy anything until 30 plus weeks ( I decided I’d Amazon prime things if necessary!) but I have friends who bought lots as soon as they found out. Just go with what works for you

All our stuff came off FB marketplace or from people at work who were more than happy to get rid of old stuff or friends. I didn’t look at getting anything sorted till late on in pregnancy due to worries because of previous miscarriage

I'm 24 weeks tomorrow, bought changing unit and crib bed so far so will get travel system soon and main cot later

I didn’t really buy anything until after the first trimester but I think it’s good to spread out the purchases over the pregnancy. If you’re having a baby shower you’ll have some idea of who you know and whether they are big gift givers or not. Personally I didn’t expect big expensive gifts for mine so I bought my own crib and travel system and so on and put clothes and blankets and other small stuff that’s fun for people to choose as gifts on my registry. My other tip is to buy a lot of the big stuff second hand from fb marketplace or such. You save a ton of money on practically new items (babies aren’t that hard on things) plus if you realize once baby arrives that another model might suit you better, you can just sell it again for the same price you paid and find the other model without having wasted any money. It really took the pressure of trying to choose the best possible stroller etc when I really had no way of knowing what features I’d want or like
