Breastfeeding

My baby boy won't take to breastfeeding, and when I express either hand or pump, nothing comes out, and my nipples hurt a lot. If anyone has advice, I'm accepting it.

This happened to me, you can try to keep pumping my midwife said my milk production might kick in eventually. I had to turn to formula because I just wasn’t producing enough milk to satisfy my son

Have you tried nipple sheilds? It's easier for them to get a latch. Might be worth getting you LO checked for tongue tie too. I think if you are expressing and it's painful it's likely the wrong size Flange you are using. X

How old is your baby?

When did you have the baby?

Nipple sheilds!!!! My boy didn’t latch at all, and so I spent hours pumping a day .. then I tried a nipple shield and he thought it was a bottle teat so he latched and boom .. he was breastfed .. plus my nipple never hurt x

@Nai i had him yesterday at 2:17. They want me to get him fed before he became 24 hours old so he can go to the bathroom and have tests done. They say he's a sleepy baby, but he has tried to grab the nipple. Just doesn't seem like anything is there for him.

Oh honey it takes time for your milk to come in. Newborns don’t drink much milk at this age anyways. You just keep breast feeding on demand. The more stimulation the more it’ll come. It came in on day 3 for me

Has a lactation nurse came to help? Everyone is definitely different and it takes time. Just keep trying to latch him.

Have you had your husband hand express? That helped me when I was having a hard time getting my son to latch. I also made an appointment to see the lactation specialist

Bottle time if it’s too much for you. Don’t put extra pressure on yourself to breastfeed

Did you know you could try donors milk instead of formula?

Yes, keep trying/pumping! I’ve heard of some mommas having success with this

Keep going, offering the breast and then if after 2 minutes he doesn't take it pump each side for 10 minutes. Do this every 1.5-2 hours. Feed your baby formula or donated breast milk in the meantime. If breastfeeding is your goal stick with this and your supply will come. Pumping can take some figuring out, I know there are some great resources on here. My milk didn't come in with my first until the end of the 3rd day and my son wasn't the best feeder. I highly recommend la leche league as a resource, their website is really good and all fact based info. Hang in there, you're doing great!

MASSAGE MASSAGE MASSAGE!!! This is a odd one but get little ones saliva and put it to your nipples, skin to skin as much as possible!

@Jessy I was producing colostrum but my son had poor latch when we started so we supplemented. It took a few months for him to get a good latch consistently all the time. Supplementing saved us both, tbh. Hugs mama, milk can take a few days to come in. Try nipple shields and see what formula they have on hand that you can also offer him. Or ask if they could bring in some milk bank milk. Every state has a milk bank.
