Choking (?) on saliva

Weird one & hard to explain but wondering if anyone here has experienced this at all... This is the second time this has happened. The first was whilst I was changing my LO a few weeks ago. The second was last night. My LO appears to choke on what seems to be saliva (it's the only thing I can think it could be - he is producing a lot atm). He goes into a panic himself whilst this happens, struggling to catch a breath & repeatedly trying to swallow with his whole body flailing. I'm so glad I woke up. He makes slight noises every time he does try to breathe, almost like gasps & with his limbs flailing the noise of that woke me too. I immediately lifted him up, patting his back until he starts to cry. I can't say for certain if he was technically choking in the sense of not breathing or his airway being blocked - each time it has happened I've grabbed him before I even had a second to fully process the situation. It all happens very quickly. It sounds like there is a blockage, he is trying to catch a breath but can't. I think he is just producing so much saliva at the moment he is choking on it but thought I'd check to see if anyone has experienced similar? Or if you know anything? TIA.

To add, I will check with the health visitor / GP but wanted to know if this is common. My LO is 10 weeks.

Hi! This happened to us quite a few times. The HV wasn’t worried at all. Didn’t help it being very scary for us!! It stopped about 14/15 weeks xx

We had the exact same thing it was scary and usually happened around night time. My HV wasn’t too worried and said they can produce a lot of saliva when they are preparing to start teething. She’s 15 weeks now and it happens a lot less than before

Yes happens a lot to my baby

At around this age they have started creating more saliva, so he's probably just getting used to it & choking on it. My LG does the same, but she has calmed a lot with it now. She's 16 weeks. They just don't know what's happening and it can be very scary for them. I usually pay her back to help her

My little boy randomly gags then coughs in his sleep

I had the same issue with my LO when we were putting her down to sleep, I asked my GP as I was really worried and staying up all night justvto make sure she could breathe. The GP suggested putting a towel under the mattress at head leveto slightly raise her head and this has helped alot xx

Happened a lot for us especially when he has a cold but it does get better with age

Yes when they start teething they start having a lot of saliva so it's normal.

I just had this last night with my little one. I woke up with this gut feeling and he looked like he was silently choking and then he started making noise and it terrified the life out of me
