Daytime naps - how many?

My May baby has just turned 5 months (4 months adjusted) and I keep reading she should be going down to 3 naps a day at some point but this just does not seem feasible. We average around 5 naps a day anywhere from 10 mins to 2 hours and her wake windows are around 1.5/2 hours. I’ve tried stretching but she is just so horrible and grumpy so I don’t understand how I’m meant to drop a naps. Is anyone else baby still taking more naps than the ‘average’ should I keep at it and force her to take less or just let her be?

I would say just let her be.. Every baby is different and there is no one rule fits for all.. You should always follow your baby’s call and make a routine which is tailored to your baby’s comfort. My baby is also 5 months old and she also takes 4-5 naps a day and does not sleep through whole night.. She wakes up 2-3 times during 8PM to 7AM.. So as long as your baby is growing fine, achieving milestones, seems happy and content.. its all good ❤️🤗

Whatever works for your little one. I've found every kid is different. My 1st daughter slept all the time and literally went to bed every night at 5pm till she was 5 years old. My 2nd daughter never napped at all throughout the day and only slept 4 hours a night lol. My 3rd daughter would take a couple really long naps in the day like 2+ hours and sleep through the night. This baby takes four 30 minute naps throughout the day, will go to bed around 6pm but is awake every 2 hours throughout the night. It is what it is 😂😂😂 x

Just so you know a nap under 20 mins doesn’t ‘count’ as a nap and remains part of their wake window x

My baby just turned 5months too and he's the same as your baby. As long as your baby still wakes up for milk and weight doesn't drop, all is well. 🤗

All of these things are based on averages. Also if 4 month adjusted you might see big changes over the next month on alertness and happier to stretch the wake windows. I'll keep doing what works for you. Lots of changes in the next few months with gross motor movements, adding solids and alterness. Trust yourself and your baby.

@Elena I did not know this! Thanks for the info x

Thanks everyone. I’m a FTM and it’s good to know that other people are in the same boat etc. You read so much and wonder if you’re not doing something right 🤦🏼‍♀️

Let her be. My baby is 6m and takes 3 naps in the day 7am, 1pm and 5pm bed time at 9pm. We managed to get into a routine but in her own time she just did it. Naps last between 30mins to an hour sometimes 2 hours if I'm lucky and contact sleeping only.

Yea all babies are not alike my boy takes two naps a day one in the morning and one in the afternoon depending on when he got up he may take one more nap but for the most part only 2

My son can average more than 3 at times, honestly, it depends on the baby themselves. Everyone is different, and there’s no right or wrong answer. They are having growth spurts and changes every month so they’ll need however much sleep they desire. I say if your daughter is tired let her sleep, don’t try to push her to spread it out, as she gets older she’ll be awake longer and naps will become more spread out and time will adjust to her needs.
