Postpartum exercise

How long did everyone wait after having their baby to rejoin the gym? I used to do ab workouts, squats and cardio but not sure when the best time is to restart as I don’t want to overdo it when my body is still returning to normal.

I worked out from 12-37 weeks and went back at 6 weeks Pp just walking uphill til 8 weeks and then introduced some light weights to 12 weeks. Then went back to trying to progress lifting weights. I’d leave it a while to do proper ab workouts. Did my first run at about 10 weeks pp x

I just went to a inflatable obstacle course yesterday - 3 months after my c section first bit of exercise I’ve done since the c section, completely fine today! I know it’s not the same, but super physical!

I waited 6 weeks both times and essentially started from scratch For running you should wait twelve weeks

I slowly started 3 weeks PP with some core breathing exercises. I then went back to weight lifting at around 5 weeks PP. I just got my diastisis evaluated and can go back to core exercises. Please don’t start ab workouts until you are sure your diastisis has healed and your abdomen wall is ready for it.

@Ana thank you, this is what I was concerned about. Did you book a private appointment to get your diastasis evaluated? My GP didn’t even check my stomach at my 8 wk check so I was thinking about booking a private clinic appt but not sure where to start.

Yeah, the GP didn’t even examined me. I did it privately back in Portugal as it was cheaper to do it back there.

I had a wide diastasis recti whilst pregnant and also had a c-section. I waited 12 weeks before going back to the gym/weights. I did however workout with a pre/post natal PT throughout pregnancy and had my diastasis checked by the physio post birth. I’m nearly 7 months pp and whilst I do core work, I still wouldn’t be able to do any planks or sit ups yet. I was under a physio for my diastasis but there are Mummy MOTs that you can book that check this and your pelvic floor etc. You can also check it yourself, lie on your back and lift you head off the floor, feel with your fingers down the middle of your tummy and see how wide the gap is.

@Nicola amazing thank you. I have seen the mummy mot clinics and have a few saved so I will get one of these booked.
