Dummy’s

My little one was born on Wednesday, he has been perfect so far bug seems to cry a lot when he’s due a poo and I think all babies associate pain with being hungry and just wants to latch. I let him and he latches and suckles for a second then spits out and cries more, not much soothes him, rocking and dancing around and singing to him work for a bit then he just cries and cries till he’s red in the face. My mum suggested a dummy as he wants to comfort from the suckle but not the food. I didn’t particularly want to as I don’t want him to have any issues as we’re both still learning on the feeding front. He does good with it but I have heard it can make it harder for him to learn to latch. I also have concerns with google telling me there’s an association of dummy’s with SIDS… if anyone has any pointers, advice or if they have used a dummy on their little one. Was very against it till I see how well it works, just eases him so quick and I hate hearing him upset

Is he getting enough milk? When my first was born, I had to combi feed until I produced enough milk. Then I phased out the formula

You may have already tried, but have you tried giving him your finger to suck on? My little boy is the same, he definitely needs to suckle for comfort at times, and when I haven’t been able to get a boob out (in the car, or trying to settle him in the crib etc) I gently put my finger in his mouth and he suckles like crazy until he’s settled. You can feel the suction on your finger looses when he’s either calm or dozing off and it’s worked great for us to avoid using a dummy! X

Dummies reduce the risk of SIDS

@Melissa He has gained weight since birth only the tiniest amount but the midwife is very happy because she said that never usually happens with just breast fed babies, this makes me think it’s can’t be hunger and I always try the boob for around 20 mins with no luck before I end up thinking it must just be a comfort suckle that he wants xx
