Congested or laryngomalacia

I’ve got a 6 week old who sounds congested but now wondering if he has laryngomalacia. What is the difference in symptoms? He is noisy but sounds like it’s in his nose

Honestly you will be able to tell if it’s layrngomalacia. My little boy is 8 months now and you can still hear it when he’s moving around or in certain positions. Noises sound squeaky and / or stridor like noises. Check incase of sucking in at the ribs / throat. I always always knew something wasn’t quite right. I have videos of my son which I’m happy to send privately to you so you can hear what a baby with layrngomalica sounds like. It’s likely to get worse with a cold xx

You will also see the throat area going in when breathing. The sound is high pitched compared to congestion. And the sound gets better in certain positions.

@Amy it sounds like it’s coming through his nose… it’s a snorting noise. Sometimes he can be really loud for example when he’s going to sleep other times like he’s asleep now and he isn’t as loud. He seems to suck in at the throat though

@AQ24 His throat sucks in. He sounds like he is snorting. I’ve got my 8 week check with him on Thursday so I’ll bring it up to the dr. The health visitor just said he sounds congested/ has a cold but this has been since birth. They just said cos he is a c section baby there’s mucus there.

I recorded for my LO and also the doctor asked me to feed so they could hear. Definitely recommend recording it because it didn’t even take a minute for the doctor to diagnose.

I’d recommend seeing a doctor if your baby is sucking in at the throat, it’s not good when they do that, it can be a sign they’re struggling with breathing. My little boy used to do it intermittently and I never managed to get it on video so it was only me whoever saw it. I think you’re uk? Depending who you see some HV aren’t aware of what layrngomalacia is, I was lucky because my sons HV used to be a peadatriction but most people can just be a HV, they aren’t trained in stuff like that. it took us so many doctor appointments to get a diagnosis. We’ve had hospital admissions too because he would gasp in his sleep and he needed to be monitored. Honestly sucking in at the neck really isn’t good.

@AQ24 I’ve got it recorded so I’ll make sure I show the dr

@Amy Yes, I am. We have our check up so I will mention it there. I mean he’s been checked over by the dr before about this but they’ve never said anything other then he’s congested due to being a c section baby

Honestly some of them are absolutely shocking. How does your baby feed? If baby feeds well and there’s no breathing issues they will unlikely be seen be anyone else (like ENT). They do grow out of layrngomalacia as they get older

@Amy He seems to feed fine. Has gained weight. I might just put it out there that I think he has laryngomalacia and see what they say

Do you have videos of him? Because if he isn’t making those noises at the appointment they won’t diagnose him

@Amy Yeah, I do. I showed the dr the videos the first time but maybe I need to push. As a first time mam I just accepted that it was him being congested
