I'm so sick of the MFing fruit flies!!! HELP

We aren't nasty people and my home is pretty tidy for the most part. They just came out of no where one day. I tossed out all the onions, potatoes, and fruit. Made a homemade concoction out of vinegar and soap in a cup and that has caught a lot. Where do they hide and what the hell can I do?! 🤬

They come from windows and love bananas. You have to wash the bananas with soap and water. They sell these hanging tubes that you pull out and hang. The fruit flies are attracted to it and stick on it. Got like 10+ flies on them.

Just be careful when hanging these up so your child doesn’t grab it or if you have pets

They sell fly traps with the blue colored light like Zevo. It works well too. If you don’t wanna hang things but it costs more

I keep my fruit bagged. Unfortunately I have a small kitchen so I don’t have much space so that’s my plan and it seems to keep them away for the most part.

I put a little wine into a bottle lid or something small & leave it out for a bit. I’ve have good luck with them drowning in it lol

I have tried everything and now keep all my fruit in my fridge and they are still around 😭 I have found citronella candles have helped the best with us along with vinegar and soap (the ones they sell in The Range have worked better than others if in the UK) xx

Have you used cider vinegar or normal?

@Nicola cider vinegar!

@Nathalie my husband got one of those! I'll have to find a spot to hang it

I'm getting them even though I don't have any fruit in the house 🤨

@Megan this might sound like a dumb question, but can you put bananas in the fridge?

@Kamille we have a smaller kitchen too!

@Nathalie I'm going to scrub my kitchen window. I've been wondering why there's like black on the seal all of a sudden so I'm thinking that could be it?

I hope those annoying flies are gone soon. Good luck! They also love garbage smells and wetness like damp areas. I live in a city so it’s hard to get rid of them even if your home is clean.

Yea that’s a good idea to scrub the windows. Keep them fully shut too

It’s always the bananas!!!!

Ah then it should work, I use raw apple cider vinegar and nothing else, but some in a little tub cling filmed it and then pierced some holes in it. X

Clean the trash can and also poor boiling water down the sink drain. They love to reproduce on the sink and traah cans. We had a awful case of them this past summer 🥴 Once we cleaned the trash can and poured boiling water down the drain (ever couple of days) along with the cide vingar. Fruit flys have been bad this year. Lile you it was all of a sudden out of nowhere.

If you have bananas, they're coming from the bananas we found in our house. When we bring the bananas in wash them with water and that's it. We started doing that and the fruit flies have now gone away.

I sadly stopped buying bananas because the flies were driving me insane, now they're gone 🤷🏻‍♀️ but I'm banana-less 🥲

We got these because of bananas and peaches! I put like little ramekins filled with apple cider vinegar and a couple drops of washing up liquid out (in the areas you notice them most). This worked so well for me.

We went on holiday for a week and came home to this problem, there were loads! I was so upset about it, but turns out fruit flies had gotten into my drip tray in my fridge and had laid eggs there! (Some milk had spilled the week before, but I cleaned it up and didn’t think anything of it) My fridge is integrated, so I had to buy a drip tray cleaning kit of amazon and and when I cleaned out my drip tray, there were lots of eggs and what came out was vile! After a couple of days the problem was gone and we have no more fruit flies! 😮‍💨

I started to cut the top part off my bananas (the part that connects them all) and throw it out as soon as I get them, and I pour boiling water down my sink drain every day and that completely keeps them away- even with other fruits and veggies around.

I’ve never used the hanging strips so they might work, but if they don’t, my go-to for getting rid of fruit flies: throw a banana peel on a tray and stick it in the oven and leave the oven open a crack overnight (oven turned off, obviously.) In the morning when you wake up, first thing you do is close the oven and turn that sucker on. I had terrible infestations of fruit flies during university due to crappy roommates, this worked like a charm every time.

@Kerry yes I need to clean under the fridge and the stove! Good idea lol

@Katharine interesting! I cut a banana in half this morning for my kid and the other half I was planning to eat a little later....came to it and there were flies just flying all over it!! Will consider this option as a last resort lol

@Lia might consider going banana-less too! Unfortunate that it's the only fruit that my toddler is into these days

@Shelley will try the hot water thing tonight!

I wash all fruits and veggies the very same day I purchase. The eggs are usually attached at the grocery store. Also they like water and used cups or anything that’s fermenting. So pour some bleach OR Vinegar down your drains they live in them. Never leave any food out. IE a half bagel, fruit, etc. something you think I’ll nibble on it or eat the rest a little later.

Bananas can go in the fridge! But I have found from certain places they can go ripe too quick/ or slow - either or 🤣 I’d stop buying completely but it’s the only fruit my toddler will never turn down 😭🤣
