Breastfeeding help

My baby is 7 days old today, I never breastfed my first so I’m really unsure but, it just feels like she’s constantly feeding, she’ll fall asleep I’ll put her down and she’s awake wanting a feed again. Am I doing something wrong or is this normal? On the verge of just giving it up and formula feeding

They often cluster feed so build up your supply. How often is she on each breast for? Is she having one or two?

It’s normal and sounds like cluster feeding. It’ll dwindle down soon. Baby cluster feeds for weight gain and growth spurts. Babies also nurse for comfort and security. So try to soothe baby without the breasts but if baby seems hungry still, it’s cluster feeding. It lasts a few days usually then goes back to normal.

Breast milk digest faster than formula just keep that in mind, first weeks the baby will feed almost hourly as his stomach is too small and again the breast milk digest faster, it will get better after the first month or so, don’t give up mommy.

This is the reassurance I needed, thank you☺️. The midwife did mention that it would happen, but just didn’t realise by day 7 that it would still be constant. I’m swapping breasts each feed, but she definitely prefers one to the other. I’ll just perservere & hopefully it settles down before my partner goes back to work!

My baby is 5 weeks now and I have actually started enjoying the cluster feeds (he does it during the day and I’m getting some sleep at night now so I’m not as tired) because it keeps my milk supply up. But if he falls asleep during feeds and I know he hasn’t had enough I take off his blanket as they can fall asleep if they are warm, or I give him little tickles across his body to keep him awake. Your baby is only a week old so obviously very different to mine, but she will work it all out and it’ll get better and easier :) one of my boobs produces more than the other but I’ve consistently used both equally and now I get a lot of milk from both. You’re doing amazing and you aren’t doing anything wrong it’s just all new!! This is my second, but first breastfed and there are lots of challenges but don’t give up! You and your baby will be THE BEST team soon enough!! 🤍🫶🏽

Totally normal! I remember worrying the same when my son was born. My daughter has just started cluster feeding yesterday (at 4 days old) and from 8pm or so she's on the boob more than she is off 😂. You're doing brilliantly, it can feel so hard sometimes especially if you're in any discomfort, but well done for persevering!!

Yes everything you’ve described is normal my baby is 9 days today and doing the exact same

Just for some reassurance, my baby fed every 45 mins to 1.5 hours until he was about 10 months old x

Sounds absolutely normal, and likely like cluster feeding. Try tickling hands and feet to keep awake during the feed x

Cluster feeding, mine was on me every half an hour for the first 3 weeks 😅 She started using me as a comfort but refused a dummy, once we established the dummy she went every 1-2 hours

@Tasha she’s refusing a dummy to! How did you establish this?😫 any tips haha! X

I had to get the tommee tippee nipple shape ones their ugly but they did the trick, they were the only ones she would take at first 🙈 She used to spit it out a lot but i knew she wasn’t hungry, so i just kept putting it back in and eventually after about 2 weeks of trying she took it fine, it was a godsend especially if it meant getting a few hours sleep before the next feed 😅 x
