Wake windows - what to do

My son is a week old, and during the rare moments he’s awake for longer then 20 minutes, am I meant to do anything with him? I talk to him a lot and cuddle him, but wasn’t sure if I was meant to use toys/playing with anything with him during those periods?

Talking to him is perfect. He's just learning to focus his eyes so looking at your face and hearing your voice is more than enough right now

Try not to worry at this stage, he’s only a week old , they literally sleep all the time in the first few weeks. You don’t need to try and keep him awake yet and wake windows are very short at this stage. You’re doing great xx

Dont worry at all about wake windows! Too young right now to have a routine. My baby didn’t have a predictable routine until 4-5 months old to be honest

Talking, singing, reading, a bit of tummy time

I wouldn’t worry about doing anything except feeding, changing, sleeping and cuddles for the first month. I think it’s just about getting through… and if you are doing those things you are doing great. If you want to do tummy time - remember you can do it with them on your chest, esp when small. So, basically cuddling..

I would think anything beyond talking, singing, tummy time, etc would be too stimulating. Everything is new to them, you don't want to overwhelm them.

At a week old, talking and cuddling is about all they can handle. They're not awake long enough for much anyway!
