Setting up the baby carrier with a newborn

We bought a ergo baby carrier second hand when I got pregnant and we want to give it a try but I’m very unsure about how to set it up properly, atm it feels very wrong somehow? Or maybe I’m not used to it but I’m afraid it’s too tight for my baby, that his spine is in the correct position, I don’t think it’s in the C shape it’s supposed to be but idk how to set it up better! Please help how does this look please? Same with his hips is this okay or what should I do? He doesn’t seem to mind but I’m worried I’m doing something wrong for his body

It looks fine to me. You can kiss his head and his legs are in M shape. At this young age please please check on him regularly while wearing him. There was a horrible story recently xx

Does he meet the weight requirements for that carrier? I preferred wrap style carriers when my babies were tiny tiny.

@Katherine thank you! I’m just worried about his spine, it looked a bit like a S I felt but also he can’t hold his head himself so maybe that’s why idk. I can hear and feel him breathe when he’s on me but definitely checking regularly! I don’t think I’ll be putting him in for very long at all, he’s so small! I just want to have an option when I have to cook some food or do some laundry. Thank you for your feedback ☺️

@Raqi yes it’s a carrier that can be used from newborns weighing 3.5kg and he’s 4.2kg. We didn’t get a wrap because my coworker told me she never used it with her newborn but I’m kind of regretting it a bit now… I think if I still feel uncomfortable carrying him in this one I’ll invest! He’s been fine and sleeping the whole time but I hate not having 100% peace of mind

Baby is too low down in the carrier. Nothing should come above the nape of babies neck to keep their airways clear. You could try starting with the waistband way higher (under bust level) to see if that uses some of the panel. Some ergo models need a newborn insert to make it safe. Hip wise the m shape is the best position for them. Tuck babies legs up as you want knees higher than bum, this will help get babies back into the desired J shape.

You can get newborn inserts for the ergo baby !

Is there a sling library near you? I went to one when my boy was newborn and they showed me how to use the sling I had correctly etc

Came here to say what @Natalie said. I would recommend getting in touch with a sling library if you have one near you, or posting on a baby wearing FB group as this currently isn't a great fit and has the potential to be unsafe

@Natalie ooh okay! That does makes sense with the fact that his spine was like a S and I tried to pull the waist band up (when he was already in it) and it felt better but next time I’ll set it up like you say. I might either wait until he gets bigger to use it or look into a wrap or a newborn insert then. Thank you for your tips!! I’ll try again with the waist band higher and see if it helps 😌

@Natalie ah yes with the picture it makes a lot more sense! He just felt so low and squished against my chest! Thank you so much ❤️

@Mikayla thank you!! The visuals help a lot 🙌🏼

@Caz hmmm idk but I’ll look it up! I was also thinking to ask the health visitor at her next visit!

@Charley I will do that, I had him in it for like 10 minutes because it felt wrong so I didn’t want to take any chances

@Zoé health visitors are not trained in babywearing. Sling library or facebook page (babywearing UK is great) Also the weight limit on a carrier is only what the material is tested from. Not necessarily when it will fit.

@Natalie oh okay! I will look it up thank you so much ☺️

I've got a newborn insert for my ergobaby. It covers them from 7lbs to 12lbs. The top of the carrier shouldn't be above the base of baby's neck. Definitely visit a sling library for a fit check and they can advise you further x

Also commenting to recommend uploading the photos to the baby wearing UK group on Facebook. It’s really helpful! 💚

I'd recommend speaking to a sling consultant or going to a sling library. Our Ergobaby also said from newborn but in reality my LO was not big enough for it until 6 weeks, she isn't small either she was 8lb 1oz at birth. The sling consultant I used was really helpful in telling us how to position baby and even the easiest way to get it on and off.

You need the newborn insert, theyre about a fiver on message id message n see who can post asap as itll solve all your issues! It usually comes with the carrier but as you bought it second hand the original owner probably misplaced it, i bought the same carrier second hand at first and had to also buy the insert separate. A wrap is defo a better option tho in my opinion i loved my close caboo and it was only a fiver on vinted brand new by someone who got no use from it and some makes last for so long as you can use them with toddlers still and just seemed so much comfier for my newborn so if your friends story put you off dont be! The awful story recently was due to rebreathing if im remembering correctly, do check his face has a clear gap to breathe through and is not “cupped” as as far as im aware its the co2 from their breathe circling back n inhaled repeatedly that causes it

I have an ergo baby and I love it, but i didn’t start using it until my LO was about 3 months. I used a wrap prior. It was more comfortable for both of us. I honestly think those carriers really aren’t meant for babies that little even though they advertise that they are.

I like wraps better around that age....like you I was very insecure about a structured carrier. Now my little one is in a more structured carrier at 10 months.
