My LO is doing the same thing. At his 4 month check up I mentioned it off hand to our pediatrician and she said that right now is a really important time for building habits, especially with sleep. She recommended I try to stop nursing him in the middle of the night as his body can handle that long stretch without eating now and we don't want to reinforce middle of the night wakeups. If he's not nursing long, he's probably just looking for comfort over an actual meal. We've only been trying for a few days and he was PISSED at first but he's definitely starting to get used to the new routine.
Same 😭😭 @Molly if you’re not nursing him. What are you doing?
@Molly How would you know if they can go those long stretches, though? This is a good idea because my son likes to be fed back to sleep sometimes but I don’t want to refuse to feed him if he’s actually hungry 😭
@Andrea lots of rocking, bouncing and snuggles. I also found one pacifier that he absolutely loves so when he starts looking for the nipple to comfort suck I just pop that in his mouth. That being said, if he's having a really rough night and I know nursing is going to help, I'm going to trust my gut.
@Levi He was sleeping 8-9 hour stretches since we brought him home from the hospital so it was pretty normal for us to just do those long stretches. Once he started waking up at night I noticed he would only nurse for a minute or two before falling asleep. If he was really hungry he would nurse a lot longer. I nurse him to sleep at bedtime then my default for wake ups is just to rock him with a pacifier but if he's absolutely inconsolable that tells me he might actually be hungry. You know your baby best, trust your instincts.
