Health visitor

How long does a trainee HV shadow our main one? And can we ask that a trainee doesn’t come? Or do they have to ask us permission/just let us know before hand? Just curious

Don’t know where you are BUT HVs need to shadow to get the adequate training So would depend how long their training is for but it shouldn’t be with the same HV or same family every time You can always ask for no students/trainee’s but unless they’ve done something to warrant it I wouldn’t automatically say no! If they don’t train we won’t have them

All they do is shadow them and don’t actually do anything at the visits. I had one at multiple visits and she just sat there listening. At the last visit (we were under their care until 5 months old) my HV asked if it was okay for her trainee to weight my baby and ask a few questions x

@Amy yes I’ve had some issues with the HV so I just don’t feel comfortable having my main and someone else as I feel like I’m always being judged lol

@Amy and I get about training that everyone needs to, but not everyone wants them to. I had trainees for my pregnancy but won’t have certain ppl now my child is born from trauma

I’d ask for a new HV and get rid of both of them

@Julia oh okay thank you, how many times did the trainee come? X I never gave permission for mine to come and had trouble the week before with another HV and had to swap and it was just uncomfortable

The thing to remember is that you can't be a health visitor without being a qualified midwife or nurse first, so they're not completely clueless. But of course you're within your rights to ask for no trainees. Also if you don't like your HV you can just decline their services or ask for a new one

She came quite often but I didn’t mind it as honestly she never spoke or said anything. She just sat there taking notes and just listening. I was never asked about permission my HV just came with her one day and said “this is my trainee. She will be attending a couple of the appointments when I come but she’ll just be sat and listening and taking notes” I just gave permission to that but not weighing as I didn’t want a mistake with her weight as she already had poor weight gain x

However if you don’t like them both just ask for someone new instead and also a trainee and a professional should not be judging you x

@Charley who said they’re useless? lol I’ve stated I’ve had issues with them and I don’t actually need to give a reason. I’ve had trainees for my pregnancy and had people help me with the birth of my child who weren’t midwives. I have asked for a new HV, my new HV showed up with a trainee unannounced, and having issues from them before isn’t great. Obviously I want someone to guide me with a child so I’m not going to get rid of HV

@Julia there’s not rly any other HV left lol. It’s a very small team and the other one caused issues. And this is a new one. My last HV judged me for breastfeeding to sleep. Judged me for not giving bottles (which was strange). Judged me for not working etc

@Julia I’ve been told they need to ask permission by someone but don’t know so I’m asking other peoples experiences lol… can’t find anything on the internet apart from jobs to become a trainee lol. I completely get that! My HV made a mistake and said he was severely malnourished and used a different chart online without comparing his recent ones and said it! 🤓🙂‍↕️

Just to let you know it's an optional service you can opt out entirely we did as our son's HV was about as useful as a chocolate tea pot and gave dangerous advice so with our second we opted out entirely

No one said they're useless, I didn't. I also haven't said you need to give a reason? I think you're reading a lot into my comment that isn't there. It's not "obvious" you want someone to guide you, many people decline health visitors for many reasons

@Charley to be fair I said mine was useless but that's my personal circumstances with the one I had 😂

@Charley I meant clueless 😂 no I meant I’ve stayed here that I’ve had issues and don’t need to give a reason for why I’m asking this question on here. I think it’s pretty obvious any parent wants guidance… maybe not everyone but that’s why we have HV. No need to be so salty for no reason… could be nicer to a fellow mum. Hope you heal ❤️‍🩹

@YazmynJade thank you so much! Yeah we have had very dangerous advice too! Even down to my son’s reflux… apparently it’s a milk allergy (which he doesn’t have). But brilliant I love that “useful as a chocolate tea pot” 😂

I've not been salty at all 😆 there was literally nothing in my first comment that wasn't nice to you 😆

@Charley it’s the way you phrased everything and commented on what I had said. Like “it’s not obvious”… who cares if it is or isn’t obvious, I just thought it was a thing people would assume, hence “obviously”. You were just picking things for no reason

No Hun, you were reading into my comment things that weren't there from the start. Literally all I said was the HVs are qualified nurses/midwives (as in not students, even though they're trainees) and that you can decline services if you want to. I said it's not obvious, because you said "obviously" 😆 lots people don't want HV services but don't know that it's optional, hence why I mentioned it in the first place. It's not obvious that you'd want a health visitor, because not everyone does! Literally have never called you names, said anything against you, just provided information. It's not that deep, not everyone is out to get you, don't go calling people salty when they're not and telling them to heal when they've not wronged you, you'll likely get a lot more out of these interactions

Funnily enough our was around our son's severe milk allergy. We also found HV don't have standard advice they have to give it's usually personal opinion
