Baby's health

Was told yesterday that my little boy has been having seizures again while on intensive care he is having a scan on Monday , am I within my right to ask intensive care not to discharge my son until further tests are done?

He won’t be discharged if he isn’t well enough

@Becki I've told the nurses not to discharge him I want further tests carrying out into why he's having seizures he had some seizures yesterday when a nurse was looking after him he's having a scan on Monday but I've said today I want further tests , he had a seizure a few weeks ago and was taken to intensive care where they did a lumber puncture and that showed a infection so basically he's on antibiotics for a infection no one has told me a name of this infection which is strange..... if people have a infection then they are told whT that infection is called surely but my boy is on antibiotics for a infection that no one knows the name of 😐

@Linda Sorry, I’m not in the medical field but I’m sure they know what they’re doing, they won’t discharge him if he’s not well enough and you can have viral or bacterial infections that aren’t necessarily given a label, if he’s showing certain signs that it’s bacterial then there will be standard antibiotics which target bacterial infections.

@Becki I noticed yesterday that both his eyes were red and one was gunky I've mentioned it to the nurse they told me to wipe it with a gauze but they said if it is still there they will swab it..... he's not had it good for the past few weeks he went to intensive care when he was born due to his umbilical cord wrapped around his neck and body and because he was struggling with his breathing so he was there for the night then on the Monday he had his seizure and been on intensive care ever since I've asked them to look into why he's having seizures , I'm epileptic myself so I'm not sure if I've passed it down to him my other children haven't had this problem

@Linda Bless him. I wish him much better soon.

Have they done blood tests? Usually they can do a blood test and grow cultures in the lab with it which will eventually come back with what the infection is. I’d be pushing for blood cultures to be done. The only issue with growing blood cultures is they can’t give an estimated time limit on when you’ll get the results as it just depends on what the infection is and how long it takes to grow in the lab so they can figure it out. If he’s got an infection they will usually be wanting to find out exactly what it is to rule out anything serious like meningitis but also different antibiotics fix different infections so they’ll need to know what infection they’re fighting to ensure he’s on the right antibiotics

@Danielle I'm not sure they did the lumber puncture and they said it apparently showed an infection but didn't say what it was then they mention meningitis but they must be more to it why he's having seizures I mentioned to the doctor that I'm epileptic but my other children don't have it and the doctor said it is hard to diagnose epilepsy in babies , I will be making sure every single test is done to determine why my baby is having seizures it upsets me because when his full body shakes he becomes upset himself afterwards 😢

@Linda I work in microbiology so I know about how the lumbar punctures are processed. Per standard procedure every lumbar puncture will be cultured and grown. If positive (or in my hospitals case we process all neonatal samples), it will be processed for PCR which can identify a range of different bacteria and viruses that cause meningitis. If his lumbar puncture is positive it’ll probably be meningitis (not always); it may not be the typical organism that causes it hence it may not present as standard typical meningitis (again may not be meningitis). The nurses and doctors will know what’s causing it as the labs have to tell them but typically they won’t go in to the scientifics to patients, they will just tell you it’s an infection. Also, the seizures may be caused by meningitis as this can be a symptom but they may also be as a result of a possible neurological condition. Hope this helps😊

@Mia me and my dad think epilepsy as I'm epileptic myself could my little boy possibly have inherited my epilepsy jeens

@Linda it is possible yes but not guaranteed
