Growth scan doesn't feel right....

I had a growth scan at 38 weeks yesterday, and baby is predicted to be massive (12lbs already!). This is a huge jump from my growth scan four weeks ago, at which baby measured 6lbs. Is it possible this is correct?! Can a baby really gain 6lbs in four weeks do we think? For context, I don't have gestational diabetes (I was tested for it and came back clear, nowhere near the threshold), and over the last four weeks I have actually lost a little bit of weight myself on the scale. My bump isn't suddenly bigger or more uncomfortable either. Because of the big measurement, I'll be having a c section on Monday 28th October. A big baby is the only reason for this. I just feel really shocked....am I really going to have a 12-13lb baby?!

That does not seem right to me whatsoever! I mean, if you still want the c section, of course, have it, because I wouldn't wanna push a baby that size out 🤦🏼‍♀️ but wow! 12lbs in 4 weeks, surely not! Keep us updated xx

That does not seem right. Whilst the scans can be up to 15% wrong in either direction for estimated weight, I would be surprised if that much of a jump was possible. If you don't want a c section you can ask for a re scan? Just to double check measurements etc

When did you last get tested for gestational diabetes? I had the test at 29 weeks and was also well within the healthy range! However little man's abdomen was measuring on the 99th percentile when I had a growth scan at 37 weeks. I had to do the pin prick blood tests for a few days and my sugars were high and I was then diagnosed with GD. I gave birth at 39+1 and he weighed 9lbs 5oz! Might be worth asking for a re scan, or asking if you can have your bloods done again? X

Congratulations on your little boy Sam! 🎉 I last had a GD test at 30 weeks, but I have a close friend who had GD this year and therefore has a monitor. I've used the monitor a couple of times out of curiosity and my sugars have been okay on it. I tested this morning for example because I had the same thought as you, and my blood sugar on waking was 3.4. After white toast and jam for breakfast, one hour later it was 5.0. With the measurements, all three (head, leg, tummy) are around the same centile. X

Thank you!! That's great you've been checking it, sounds like you can't have it then. Your post breakfast results, especially with jam, you'd expect to be higher if you did? I'm guessing the scan is wrong then and would be amazed if baby is that size. Are you having any other scans? Can you please let us know weight of the baby when they do arrive? I'm invested now 😂 x

Baby grows typically 1.2 oz. A day or about 1lb a month. There is about a 2-3 lb spread for error so you could have been 7-8 lbs at 34 weeks and which could put you at 9lbs ish. I would maybe get a private growth scan as a second opinion before agreeing to a section as growth scans are notorious for being off. But 6lbs in 4 weeks when there is no GD doesn’t sound right. And just having a big baby is not a medical reason for induction or section. If he is that big it could be risk for shoulder distotia BUT it doesn’t sound like he is really that big. I’ve heard lots of mums agree to an induction or section for a suspected big baby only for them to come out at 6-7lbs and regret their decision. Do some research and make your decision based on that not one outlier scan.

Nope I'm not due to have any other scans now, or at least there are none planned. I was 38 weeks yesterday, and the c section is booked for just 5 working days from now. Of course - I'll come back and comment how much baby weighed so you can see if it's accurate or not! X

Good luck! It's difficult as with my daughter they told me she weighed 8lbs 3 at 36 weeks, but when she was born at 42 weeks she was 7lbs 3. They told me my son weighed 8lbs 1 at 37 weeks and he was born weighing 9lbs 5 at 39 weeks.. so it's all to be taken with a pinch of salt really!! Good luck though, I hope it all goes OK for you xx

I agree this does not seem accurate and to be honest growth scans rarely are . I resonate with @Charley ‘s response . You can look at https://birthrights.org.uk for more information as well

Also if you press play here you can listen to some that could be helpful for you https://evidencebasedbirth.com/evidence-for-induction-or-c-section-for-big-baby/

I was told by the consultant that growth scans for big babies are very inaccurate. They’re better for picking up small babies. I had a 10lb 11oz baby last time at 42 weeks with no issues though so a big baby isn’t reason enough to have a section. This time the baby is estimated 10lbs at 42 weeks and I haven’t been pressured into anything

Mine was accurate. At 36+6 they said he was 9lb, predicted to reach 11lbs 40 weeks. I got induced at 37+1 and he was born 9lbs1. All you can do is your own research. I’m glad I got induced in the end even though it was the last thing I had planned. I also didn’t have GD and had lost weight myself. So very similar to you. Good luck xx
