Colostrum

Hiya I’m 33 weeks pregnant and both my breast leak a lot of colostrum I’m waking up to puddles in my bed from both breast, would it be okay to start collecting this as it feels like it’s just going to waste, I have stuff to collect the colostrum. FTM here

Speak with your Midwife/OB as it not advised to collect colostrum until around 37/38 weeks as it can make you go into preterm labour. Are you sure it’s colostrum that leaking ? When I was pregnant I was leaking clear liquid not in puddles but here and there

Don’t express at all until you’re 36 weeks because it can induce labour, after 36 weeks you can start to collect your colostrum Talk to your midwife about it and they’ll show you how to do it by hand! Don’t worry, it’s not a waste.. your body will make plenty! And it can only be stored for maximum 4 weeks in the freezer so don’t bother now Good luck!

@Suzanne yeh it’s definitely colostrum at first it was clear liquid but now it’s like an orangey yellow colour. There’s lots of it but I won’t collect it as don’t want early labour xx

@Chelsea thank you I will speak with midwife for sure :) xx

I’d wait a few more weeks just to be safe. Colostrum can be stored for 6 months in the freezer though so even if you collect and baby is late it will still be good in the freezer x

My midwife told me if it’s naturally leaking, I can collect it. As long as you’re not squeezing/actively expressing it, you can collect it :) If you’re not stimulating your body, it’s not going to do anything to your labour. I was leaking a syringe full by the time I was 27 weeks, so I collected it, but started actively expressing it at 36 weeks x

If you want to try to collect what’s leaking without hand expressing you can buy milk collection cups that you can wear in your bra and they’re small enough that they’re not super noticeable just remember to check and empty them within every 2 hours I believe it is

The Hakka brand collection cups have really good reviews if you want to go that route
