Colostrum syringes

After much perseverance I’ve just managed to see some colostrum! I was given syringes by my midwife but I’m confused they have a thread at the end as if to put a screw on cap. But I have no caps. Are they supposed to have caps? Is it pointless me expressing into these if I can’t cap them, very unsure.

Please share how long it took you to see any colostrum and what did you do?

They may just be a different type of syringe - as long as they have come from a sterile packaging, I can’t see an issue with you using them, as they should be airtight anyway so liquid can’t just ‘fall’ out x

You can buy syringe caps on amazon if you have lots of syringes but if you are collecting lots of colostrum you can buy more syringes with caps :)

A midwife told me that for a while they discontinued the caps because they had been linked to a couple of infant deaths where people had forgotten to remove them but since reinstated to help keep bacteria low. Maybe wrap them in cling film or put them in clean zip lock bags? If you're worried about them leaking pop them tip up in a mug

@B The syringes I was given by my midwife on Monday had caps so I’m guessing they aren’t discontinued anymore😅

Lots of areas don't provide caps anymore due to an incident where the cap was not removed before the syringe was put in the baby's mouth which is a choking hazard. Some places have reintroduced them. You don't need a lid, the liquid won't drop out, just put the syringe in a clean sandwich bag and place in the freezer 😊
