Re-lactation question

Hi everyone I have a four month old baby. He was formula fed from day 1 at the hospital. I would try to latch him but my milk production was really slow and low. I mixed whatever I got with the formula for a few days. My baby would start crying after latching for a couple minutes and would only take bottle. I have a friend who is a homeopathic doctor and he suggested a remedy that he is sure will help me produce breastmilk since I get 0 breastmilk right now. My breasts never got full really, it’s like my body didn’t even produce breastmilk. I tried latching my baby again at 4 months a few times but he doesn’t even look at the breast, let alone latch. Does anyone think that relactation is possible with the help of medicines, even if the baby doesn’t latch much? I really want to breastfeed because of gut issues formula fed babies have later on in life. Please let me know if anyone has experienced something similar. Thanks

I think it’s quite unlikely at this age even if you could produce breastmilk as baby will have no idea how to latch.Feeding from a bottle and the breast are completely different motions. You’d need to work very closely with a lactation consultant to see what is possible. If you were able to produce breastmilk you may be able to pump? But even still I’m not sure if you’d be able to get enough of a milk supply now to sustain your babies needs as your milk supply is usually built and regulated in the first 12 weeks which you’ve obviously missed x

Agree with Yasmin- baby will unfortunately struggle, pump to see if you get anything and bottle feed that, it’s just as good!

@Yasmin Actually I used to pump too but my milk production dropped everyday and eventually zero. Pumping didn’t increase my milk production and I heard latching the baby does the trick, which didn’t happen because my baby would start crying. I feel bad for my poor baby and his guy health. Not sure if adding bio gaia probiotic drops will help.

His gut health will already be what it is based on how you’ve fed him already. Don’t beat yourself up. You did the best you could at the time and he will be fine I’m sure.

@Lottie Thank you. Hopefully that’s the case
