PGP and birth!

Hi, I have PGP and sciatica and have only just found out that the pelvic girdle can make birth particularly difficult (makes sense!). Anybody had experience of this? I don’t want a c section - this is my second so I’m hoping for another v-birth and that this one comes flying out 😂😂

I think it is mostly just because you can’t always get into the best positions - my midwife tried to get my on my side for pushing but it was horrendous for my hips and pelvis. I had an epidural but it had started to wear off a bit at this point so I could feel the pain in my joints but I couldn’t feel enough to get onto all fours. I ended up pushing on my back and that’s not the best position for pushing but actually I only pushed for 15 mins and he absolutely flew out (he was also a 9lb chunky boy 😅)! So it can make it harder if you have a preferred position for birthing but midwives can help get you into a comfortable position for pushing when the time comes.

I had PGP with both but was a lot worse with baby 2 (I even tried acupuncture and used crutches). But my second birth was ‘better’ than my first in the sense that they were both vaginal and although I was induced with no 2 I only had gas and air and the pushing phase was shorter and only resulted in 1st degree tears, unlike my first which I had pethadine, pushed longer and had 2nd degree tear needing stiches. I was on hands and knees for both but for baby no 2 I was slightly more upright.

Honestly for me as my Labour progressed the pgp seemed to fade. I barely walked in to the ward on crutches to be induced but fairly easily got from bed to toilet once labour started and even managed a bath (id not done that in weeks because of the pgp) I did have an epidural in the end because weeks of zero sleep with the pgp and then a day of labour pains after being induced I was exhausted and worried about having the strength to push (plus I have degenerative disc disease and hypermobility which apparently makes birth more painful but obviously can't compare) birth wasn't straight forward and was assisted delivery with forceps because he became distressed but turned out the cord was round his neck and arm so was unrelated to the pgo and back issues and just an unfortunate thing. I think as has been already said, the difficulty comes from being unable to get in to certain positions and labour as comfortably. Good luck, sending good thoughts that your birth goes the way you hope ❤️

Thank you girls - it’s good to hear experiences!
