Gender

So I’ve heard with the 20 weeks scan on the NHS they don’t do anything gender reveal related not even hide the gender in an envelope even if asked, is this true? A family member went private at 16 weeks for the gender is this common?

The NHS can do it, it depends on the sonographer. There’s no harm in asking. I used to work in the antenatal clinic and had a lady tell me they’d just had the scan and they weren’t having a proper gender reveal but they asked the sonographer to put it in an envelope and they’d ask the first person they saw to open it and tell them. I was the first person they saw on coming out the scan room so they asked me to open it and tell them. I felt honoured they’d asked me and their reaction was amazing as they had four boys and were finally getting their little girl

Some will do it, some won't. It depends on the sonographer and also the hospital policy. Some won't write it down in case they get sued for getting it wrong 🤣🤣

You can ask, but lots of places it's in their policy that they can't do anything other than a verbal confirmation. Some places they aren't even allowed to say verbally! Remember it's an anomaly scan and their job is to look for medical concerns, then if there's time and baby is in a good position they may tell you. If baby is not in a good position they likely won't spend much time looking. If you're wanting gender to be kept a secret for a reveal or something, it's better to pay for a private scan

A lot of them won't do it. I paid to find out my babies gender at a private clinic at 17 weeks. It was 100% worth it. I have all the photos they took during the session, plus we had a sneak peak 4D experience also the video. I went to window to the womb and if you want to find out there and then you can have a light show or they just say or they can put it in an envelope (there are usually discount codes online too)

Mine wouldn’t do it, definitely wouldn’t write it down, so I had a private gender scan at 16 weeks, glad I did tbh as when I went my 20 week scan they didn’t even mention the gender 😂 then when I said oh just checking is it still a girl she just said looks like it ….🙃😂 xx

Most places will only verbally say it Remember it’s not a gender scan with the nhs but an Anomaly scan If they have time they will see if they can find out the gender but they only have so much time to screen for 10/11 conditions

@Phoebe was the same for me!

I think it's policy not to write it down. However you can probably meet the odd person who will hide it for you.😉 I suppose you could get cheeky with it and take it two different cupcakes and ask them to take one for themselves without you looking leaving you with the colour of the gender you're having (typically blue for boy pink for girl🤷🏾‍♀️

I’m based in Newcastle and they wrote it down for us and asked us to look away whilst they were doing the checks where the bits are to keep the surprise - appreciate that’s not always the case but no harm in asking 💖

This is true I asked said they weren't allowed to do it your either allowed to know or not know so I had a private scan at 16 weeks did my gender reveal and then had it confirmed on my 20 week scan just incase it was inaccurate

Nhs will tell you, not anyone else and won’t write it down. It’s written on all scan letters. If you want a gender reveal where you wouldn’t know at all you’ll have to go private, where they’d sort a cannon/balloon for you x

It just depends on the trust. We had babies at 2 different hospitals and both said they wouldn’t because it adds extra time and issues for them in terms of having to do paperwork because people would have to sign and they had complaints before so people would need to sign waivers to say they understand it may not be accurate and it’s a lot more for them. We went private with both (2nd we had a blood test to confirm at 8 weeks)

Different hospitals have different policies on writing it down. Some will, some won't.
